Stopping caffeine cold is a brave move that many people try when they feel like they are drinking way too much coffee or energy drinks. Most of us start our day with a hot cup of joe but we don’t realize how much our brain depends on that chemical hit. When you suddenly decide to stop your body goes into a bit of a shock because it has been used to that daily stimulation for a long time. The first day might feel okay but usually by the second day you start to feel the heavy effects of withdrawal. Stopping caffeine cold causes your blood vessels to open up wider than usual which is why the headaches start to kick in almost immediately. It is a very strange feeling to go from being super alert to feeling like you are walking through a thick fog.

    Stopping caffeine cold

The Massive Headache and Physical Pain

The most famous symptom of stopping caffeine cold is definitely the pounding headache that just won’t go away. This happens because caffeine actually narrows the blood vessels in your brain and when it is gone those vessels expand and put pressure on your nerves. It can feel like a migraine for some people and it usually hits the back of the head or behind the eyes. Along with the head pain many people report that their muscles feel heavy and tired as if they have the flu. You might feel like you just want to lay down on the couch all day because your body doesn’t have its usual fake energy source. It is amazing how one little molecule can have such a big grip on your physical comfort.

Stopping Caffeine Cold: Why Your Mood Changes So Quickly

Another thing you will notice when stopping caffeine cold is that you become very grumpy and easily annoyed by small things. Caffeine triggers the release of happy chemicals like dopamine and when you take that away your brain gets a bit sad and confused. You might find yourself snapping at your friends or family for no reason at all. This irritability is a natural part of the process because your nervous system is trying to find its balance again. Some people even feel a bit of anxiety or a low mood for a few days until the brain chemistry levels out. It is important to tell the people around you that you are quitting coffee so they know why you are acting a bit different.

Sleeping Better but Feeling More Tired

It sounds like a contradiction but stopping caffeine cold makes you feel exhausted while also helping you sleep deeper at night. During the day you will likely feel like a zombie because your body is used to being pushed by stimulants. You might find yourself yawning in the middle of important meetings or feeling like you need a nap at 2 PM. However once you finally get to bed at night you will probably find that you fall asleep much faster. Caffeine has a long half-life which means it stays in your system for many hours after you drink it so without it your sleep quality actually improves a lot. You will wake up feeling more naturally rested after the first week of struggle is over.

Stopping Caffeine Cold: The Science Behind Mood, Digestion, and Heart Rate Changes

Your stomach might also feel a bit weird when you are stopping caffeine cold because coffee is something that keeps your digestion moving fast. Some people get a bit constipated or feel bloated when they first quit. Also you might notice that your heart rate feels a lot calmer and more steady. Many people who drink a lot of espresso suffer from heart palpitations or a “jittery” feeling in their chest. Once the caffeine is out of your system that nervous energy goes away and you feel much more relaxed. It is a good sign that your heart is not being forced to work overtime by a chemical anymore.

The Difficulty of Focusing on Work

Concentration becomes a huge challenge during the first few days of stopping caffeine cold at the office. You might stare at your computer screen for an hour and realize you haven’t actually done anything. This lack of focus is because caffeine helps the brain stay sharp and alert by blocking the signals that tell you that you are tired. Without that block you feel the full weight of your fatigue. It takes about three to five days for the brain to start producing its own natural alertness again. Until then you might need to take frequent breaks and drink a lot of water to keep your mind from wandering off.

Long Term Benefits for Your Health

Even though the first week is a nightmare stopping caffeine cold has some great long term perks for your health. You will save a lot of money by not visiting expensive coffee shops every morning. Your teeth will likely look whiter because you aren’t staining them with dark liquids anymore. Most importantly you will regain your natural energy levels. Instead of needing a drug to wake up your body will learn how to produce energy from food and good sleep. Many people say that after a month they feel more stable and less stressed than they ever did when they were hooked on caffeine.

If you really want to succeed at stopping caffeine cold you need to prepare yourself for the battle. Drinking massive amounts of water is the best way to help with the headaches and to flush the toxins out. You should also try to get more sleep than usual during the first three days to help your body recover. Some people find that switching to herbal tea gives them something warm to hold which helps with the habit part of the addiction. It is a tough journey but once you get past the first four days the worst is usually over and you start to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

In the end stopping caffeine cold is a personal choice that can lead to a much healthier lifestyle. It shows you how much power a simple drink can have over your mind and body. While the headaches and the bad moods are difficult they are only temporary. Once you break the chains of the addiction you will realize that you don’t actually need a cup of brown liquid to be a productive and happy person. It is a great feeling to wake up and feel awake all on your own without needing to rush to the kitchen first thing in the morning.
