Corruption is widespread in Somalia, but the 2019 anti-corruption law has improved public administration. Somalia has anti-corruption policies, which have been greatly improved through international cooperation. Somalia faces many challenges, including weak institutions, political instability, and security issues.

Somalia was ranked 180 out of 180 countries in the 2023 Corruption Perceptions Index. Corruption remains rampant in Somalia, and many challenges are faced in controlling it. International support is also being sought for this. Issues of political instability continue to be a barrier to these challenges. Despite facing all these challenges, the Somali Governorate is making efforts with the help of international cooperation.

    Anti-Corruption Reforms and Legislative Efforts

Anti-corruption is being termed and legislated in Somalia. Anti-corruption can be curbed largely by enacting legislation. Somalia introduced anti-corruption legislation in 2019 as well as various other legal activities.

Some activities are very weak due to limited capacity and political instability in Somalia. However, the government has taken steps to strengthen many institutions. The purpose of this is to increase accountability and political stability. Which is a very important measure for the economy of any country.

Challenges to Effective Governance and Accountability

Governance and accountability in Somalia face many challenges. Ongoing conflict hampers Somalia’s anti-corruption efforts. Somalia’s weak institutions and political instability are also among these obstacles. Low-security resources and a weak judicial system further weaken the fight against corruption.

A strong judicial system in any country is a major challenge against corruption. Distrust in government institutions has mostly increased due to these challenges. Despite these challenges, the Somali government is taking several measures to curb corruption.

International Support and Partnerships in Combating Corruption

Somalia has sought help from international cooperation to tackle corruption. International organizations that have helped Somalia tackle corruption include the World Bank, the United Nations, and the IMF. These international institutions have offered financial assistance, capacity building, and initiatives to improve governance. Due to this corruption can be stopped and strict measures can be taken against it. However, these international initiatives in Somalia are undermined by the inadequacy of the political and security system.

Somalia has taken several steps to address illiteracy, with legal terminology and international partnerships being the most important. But despite this, political instability, weak institutions, and security issues in Somalia have been a constant obstacle to these initiatives.

Organizations such as the World Bank and the IMF have also provided much assistance to Somalia in tackling corruption. The aim of this is to increase transparency and accountability. Somalia faces various challenges in combating corruption, which requires continued international support and strong internal systems.

Due to good relations with friendly countries, Somalia is given a lot of aid. Among them, the Gulf states, especially the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar are providing all kinds of humanitarian, financial, and military assistance for the welfare of Somalia. All these countries and states want an end to the unrest in Somalia so that people can live a happy life here.
