Somalia is facing a worsening food crisis, with severe weather and food insecurity affecting millions of people. Recent heavy rains have displaced thousands, while a prolonged drought has threatened agricultural production and livestock survival.

The deteriorating situation has severely affected food availability, putting millions of people at risk of malnutrition. Urgent relief measures and durable solutions are essential to address this crisis and prevent the humanitarian crisis from escalating further.

Impact of Extreme Weather on Food Insecurity in Somalia

Severe drought and devastating floods in Somalia have affected more than 3.6 million people over the past year, severely impacting food availability. Agricultural production has declined by up to 40 percent, while water shortages have killed more than 2 million livestock, exacerbating food insecurity in rural areas.

Rising Malnutrition Rates Due to Food Insecurity

Nearly 1.8 million children in Somalia are acutely malnourished, with 300,000 at risk of serious health problems. Food shortages have led to a 30 percent increase in food prices, leaving millions of families without basic nutrition. The crisis is particularly severe for the most vulnerable, making food insecurity even more worrisome.

Urgent Humanitarian Response to Combat Food Insecurity

Aid agencies have stepped up efforts to reach 4 million people in 2024, but more than 6 million people still need urgent assistance. Global donors have pledged $1.2 billion, but a 40 percent funding shortfall remains, which could jeopardize efforts to address food insecurity in affected areas.

Somalia is facing a severe food insecurity crisis due to extreme weather conditions, increasing malnutrition and insufficient food production. Despite relief efforts, millions of people are still affected, while food shortages and rising prices have further complicated the situation.

If urgent action is not taken, food shortages could worsen, posing serious risks to vulnerable populations. Sustainable strategies, such as climate adaptation and expanded relief efforts, are needed to address the crisis. Joint regional and global efforts are essential to restore stability in affected areas and mitigate the humanitarian crisis.
