Somaliland’s Minister of Aviation, Fu’ad Ahmed Nuh, has signed a $70 million investment agreement with Skills International Investment to renovate and modernize Egal International Airport in Hargeisa.
The deal, finalized at Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), marks the largest investment in Somaliland’s airport history and signals a new chapter in the region’s infrastructure development.
Egal International Airport Upgrade: Strategic Significance for Hargeisa and Somaliland
Hargeisa, with a population close to 1.2 million, is Somaliland’s commercial hub.
Its economy benefits from growing sectors like construction, retail, and gemstone mining. For many years, Hargeisa’s air transport infrastructure has struggled to keep pace with increasing demand.
Upgrades to Egal International Airport promise to vastly improve regional connectivity, boost tourism, and reduce travel costs for both business travelers and the diaspora.
Complementary Projects & Regional Airport Trends
This investment follows prior infrastructure efforts across Somaliland.
Notably, Taiwan Mission helped construct the 6 km “Taiwan Avenue,” linking Egal International Airport to downtown Hargeisa, improving access and city-airport connectivity.
There have also been smaller airport and runway upgrades: Hargeisa’s Egal Airport attained international standards after runway extension, added lighting for night operations, and a security perimeter fence with funding from Kuwait.
Potential Impacts & Economic Opportunities
- Job Creation: The airport overhaul will generate employment during construction and operations.
- Trade and Tourism: Improved airport capacity will attract more airlines, opening Somaliland to more visitors and trade.
- Regional Hub Potential: With improved facilities, Hargeisa could position itself as a transit node for East Africa and offer competition to neighboring hubs.
Challenges & Key Considerations:
While promising, there are several challenges:
- Financing Transparency: Clear financial disclosures and sustainable investment models are critical to avoid debt risks.
- Airspace Authority & Security: Somaliland’s aviation sector has ongoing discussions about reclaiming full control over its airspace and strengthening airport security infrastructure.
- International Recognition & Partnerships: Somaliland’s lack of formal recognition poses logistical and diplomatic hurdles for aviation agreements and bilateral treaties.

Looking Ahead
In the coming months, implementation of the $70 million upgrade will likely begin with runway, terminal, and infrastructure improvements.
Collaboration with international partners and regulators will be essential.
If executed well, this project could serve as a model for similar upgrades in Berbera, Burao, and other regional airports in Somaliland and beyond.
The $70 million investment into Hargeisa’s Egal International Airport is more than just an infrastructure upgrade—it is a statement about Somaliland’s aspirations for connectivity, economic growth, and regional integration.
As this work unfolds, it could reshape aviation, trade, and development opportunities across the Horn of Africa.
