Hormuud Telecom has unveiled an innovative voice-based technology that provides users with instant access to information—without needing smartphones or internet. The system, powered by Caaqil AI, works through basic mobile phones, allowing users to ask questions and receive answers in Somali. This breakthrough aims to bridge the digital divide in underserved communities.

Caaqil AI Bridges Digital Divide Across Somalia

According to Hormuud, over 70% of Somalia’s population lacks consistent internet access. Caaqil AI targets this gap by offering knowledge services via voice on basic mobile phones. In its pilot phase, the system reached over 1 million users in rural areas. Early user data shows a 45% increase in access to educational and health information. This technology is designed to reach users typically excluded from digital solutions.

    Voice-Based Access Empowers Underserved Communities

A 2024 report by Somalia’s Ministry of Communication found that 68% of households use basic mobile phones as their primary tech device. With voice-based tech, users can now access information without literacy or digital skills. Surveys from the launch phase show that 62% of users were first-time technology service users. This shift enhances access to services in marginalized and low-income communities. Voice platforms are proving highly inclusive and culturally adaptable.

    Local Language Integration Enhances Usability

The AI system supports Somali language, making it more accessible than English-based digital tools. Studies show that users retain 30% more information when content is delivered in their native language. In trials, 80% of users reported high satisfaction with the Somali-language interface. Language accessibility has significantly improved user engagement and trust. This localization ensures relevance and ease of adoption across diverse communities.

Expanding Smart Services Through Caaqil AI Innovation

Hormuud plans to scale up services by integrating agricultural tips, weather forecasts, and mobile health support. Current projections estimate over 3 million users will be reached by the end of 2025. Local NGOs have reported increased collaboration opportunities through the platform. This highlights the potential for Caaqil AI to support broader development goals and smart service delivery in Somalia.

Hormuud plans to extend Caaqil AI’s capabilities to additional sectors such as finance and education. This expansion is expected to impact over 5 million users by 2026, enhancing digital literacy and services in remote areas.
