    Mayor of Mogadishu “Muungaab” Returns to Lead After 10 Years

    Brigadier General Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab, the new Governor of the Banaadir region and Mayor of Mogadishu, has been warmly welcomed back to his role. Many important people from across Somalia visited him to congratulate him on his reappointment.

    Leaders Show Support for Mayor of Mogadishu “Muungaab”

    Dr. Muungaab’s home was buzzing with visitors.
    These visitors included high-ranking government members, parliament members, religious leaders and Clan Elders and Chiefs.

    Moreover, a special delegation of Somali women, including female Members of Parliament and government officials, led by Ms. Jawahir Mahmud Jama (Barqab), head of the Banaadir Region Women’s Union, expressed their full support.

    Young Somalis also came, showing their desire to work with the Mayor to develop the capital city.

    Special Thanks to President Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud

    Mr. Ali Mohamed Geedi, a former Prime Minister, congratulated Dr. Muungaab and promised to work together on development plans for Mogadishu.

    The Chief of National Police, Major General Asad Osman Abdulle, and the Banaadir Regional Police Chief, Colonel Mahdi Omar Mumin, met with Mayor Muungaab to discuss strengthening security in the capital.

    All visitors thanked President Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud for his wise decision to reappoint Dr. Muungaab.

    They prayed for the Mayor’s success in his big national responsibilities.

    Who is the Mayor of Mogadishu “Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab”?

    Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab was born in 1972 in Mongab village, near the coastal city of Warsheikh in the Middle Shabelle region.

    He grew up learning about religion, knowledge, and discipline.

    He holds a Ph.D. in Sharia and Law from Omdurman Islamic University in Sudan (2020), a Master’s degree (2016), and a Bachelor’s degree (2003) from the International University of Africa.

    His career includes:

    • Teacher: He started his journey as a teacher.
    • Diplomatic Advisor: He then worked as a diplomatic advisor.
    • Military Judge: He moved into the military judiciary, becoming the Head of the Supreme Court of the Armed Forces.
      He was known for his strong leadership and fairness.
    • Former Mayor of Mogadishu: Dr. Muungaab first served as Governor of Banaadir region and Mayor of Mogadishu in 2014.
      During that time, he made clear improvements in city infrastructure and local governance.
    • State Minister: He later served as the State Minister for Justice.

    On May 28, 2025, President Dr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud reappointed him to lead Banaadir and Mogadishu again.

    Many see this as the return of a strong leader at a time when wise and firm leadership is much needed.

    This reappointment brings hope for continued development and stability in Mogadishu.
