Mogadishu Port, a cornerstone of Somalia’s economy, has taken a major step forward in its modernization efforts with the introduction of advanced operational equipment.

Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur (Ameriko), Director General of the Mogadishu Port Authority, officially unveiled a fleet of new forklifts and specialized cargo-handling vehicles designed to enhance efficiency at the capital’s busiest seaport.

This modernization follows a remarkable achievement in global rankings.

The 2024 Container Port Performance Index (CPPI) by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence named Mogadishu Port the most efficient port in East Africa, and among the top five most developed ports in Africa, highlighting its rapid growth and strategic importance in regional trade.

    New Expansion

The newly deployed equipment, including modern cranes and reach stackers, complements a broader expansion that has nearly doubled the port’s cargo-handling capacity.

Minister of Ports and Marine Transport Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur inaugurated a new container terminal, boosting annual throughput from 150,000 to 250,000 TEUs, solidifying Mogadishu’s position as a key trade hub.

Ambassador Nur emphasized that the new vehicles are part of a comprehensive plan to advance port operations, enhance revenue collection, and support national economic growth.

Since taking leadership in late 2025, he has prioritized efficiency, professionalism, and strategic partnerships to elevate the port’s performance.

Mogadishu Port Makes Somalia A Major Player in Regional and International Trade

The modernization of Mogadishu Port reflects Somalia’s broader recovery and development ambitions.

By investing in critical infrastructure and achieving recognition on the continent, the port strengthens the nation’s economic resilience and reaffirms Somalia’s role as a major player in regional and international trade.

The progress demonstrates that targeted investments, innovation, and reform can transform key infrastructure into a driver of national prosperity.
