Puntland forces have launched a major operation against Islamic State (IS) fighters in the Golas Mountains, retaking large swathes of territory. The operation, dubbed “Operation Halak”, captured key IS centers and significantly reduced their influence.
US airstrikes have hit high-level militants and severely damaged the IS leadership. However, Puntland officials say additional international support is necessary to further strengthen local security and counter extremism. Meanwhile, ongoing fighting has led to casualties on both sides, underscoring the difficulties in defeating IS in the region.
Key Objectives of Puntland’s Military Offensive
Puntland forces, with the support of local militia groups, have wrested 250 square kilometers of territory from Islamic State (IS) militants in the Golas Mountains. The operation, which began in early February 2025, is set to reduce IS influence in the region by 60 percent.
More than 300 ISK fighters have been killed or captured in the operations of the Puntland forces, which has seriously affected their combat capability. In addition, 50 of the group’s key hideouts have been destroyed, significantly reducing their offensive power in the region.
Role of International Support in Combating IS in Somalia
US airstrikes proved to be a key factor in the operation, during which 15 high-level IS fighters were targeted in the first month. International counter-terrorism aid to Somalia increased by 20 percent last year, resulting in more than $100 million in military support and infrastructure development. According to U.S. defense officials, the strikes have eliminated 30 percent of IS’s leadership, which could be a turning point in the war against extremism in the Horn of Africa.
Impact of the Offensive on Regional Stability and Security
The military operation in the Golas Mountains has seen a 40 percent drop in IS activity, reducing attacks on civilians and security forces in Puntland. However, the offensive has led to an 18 percent increase in the number of displaced people, as the local population seeks refuge from the fighting. According to experts, if military pressure is maintained and international support continues, the overall security situation in Puntland is expected to improve by 25 percent in the next two years.
The ongoing military campaign in Puntland has achieved significant gains against IS fighters, helping to retake territory they hold and limit their influence. However, investment in global cooperation and a long-term strategy is essential to ensure sustainable stability and security. If these efforts are not sustained, the region may again be engulfed in militancy and instability.
