Somali diaspora culture is a very beautiful and important thing that thousands of families are trying to protect while living far away from their original home in places like europe and north america when people move to a new country they face a lot of pressure to change their habits and speak only the local language

Which makes it very hard to remember their roots this is why parents worry so much about their young children who grow up in big cities because these kids might forget the beautiful traditions and the language of their grandparents if they do not practice them at home every day keeping somali diaspora culture alive requires a lot of hard work from the whole community because the modern world moves very fast and can easily wash away the old lifestyle

many mothers and fathers make a big effort by talking only in their native tongue when they are inside the house so that the kids learn the words naturally from a young age they also cook traditional meals like bariis and hilib every weekend to bring

The smell and taste of the homeland into their new apartments these small daily actions are very powerful tools for protecting the identity of the next generation who need to know where they came from so they can feel confident and proud of their background in a foreign society

Why weekend schools help save the somali diaspora culture

local communities in countries like Britain and Canada have started special weekend classes to help young kids learn how to read and write their language properly these schools are essential for strengthening the somali diaspora culture because they teach the children about the rich history of their ancestors and the beautiful poems that the country is famous for when kids meet other children from the same background they do not feel alone or confused about their identity anymore they realize that they can be part of the new country while still holding onto their original roots with a lot of pride

the teachers in these centers are usually volunteers who give their free time because they love their heritage and want to pass it on to the youth they organize cultural festivals where girls wear the traditional guntiino and boys wear the macawis to dance and sing old songs together this active participation makes the somali diaspora culture something fun and exciting for the teenagers instead of just a boring rule that their parents repeat every day at the dinner table

The big challenges facing young teenagers today

even with all these great programs the youth still face a massive struggle because they live between two completely different worlds every single day at school they want to blend in with their local classmates and follow the new trends in music and clothes but when they come home they are expected to follow the traditional rules of their families this double life can create a lot of stress and misunderstanding between the parents and the children if they do not talk openly about their feelings

How technology connects youth to the somali diaspora culture

modern technology and social media platforms are actually helping the young generation connect with their roots in a very new way many young creators are making videos and podcasts to discuss somali diaspora culture using a mixture of English and their native tongue this unique style makes the old traditions relatable for the youth who live in western cities because they can discuss their history using modern tools that they understand well.

The role of traditional weddings in keeping the community together

another major event that helps to maintain the bond between families is the traditional wedding party which brings hundreds of people together from different cities when people attend these big celebrations they experience the true spirit of the somali diaspora culture through the traditional food and the classic music that plays all night long these events show the young people that their community is big and supportive which gives them a strong sense of safety and belonging in the foreign land

Building a bright future without losing the past

finally we must understand that keeping your identity does not mean you cannot succeed in the new country many educated young people from the community are becoming doctors and lawyers and politicians in the west while still keeping the somali diaspora culture close to their hearts they show the world that you can adapt to a new environment without throwing away the values and beliefs of your parents
