In a recent interview with an American television network, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud confirmed that the terrorist threat in Somalia has significantly declined in recent years.
He attributed this progress partly to U.S. military assistance, which has strengthened the Somali National Army’s ability to combat extremist groups.
Two Decades of Strategic US-Somalia Cooperation
Somali President Mohamud highlighted that Somalia and the United States have maintained close military and security cooperation for nearly twenty years.
This partnership includes:
- Training Somali forces
- Providing logistical and intelligence support
- Assisting in counterterrorism operations
These efforts have played a key role in weakening groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS.
Particularly in southern and central Somalia.

Somalia President said:
“Today, Mogadishu is peaceful, businesses are operating, and our country is rebuilding itself.”
Improved Regional Security in East Africa
The President also noted that neighboring countries such as Kenya and Ethiopia have experienced a decrease in terrorist attacks over the past two years.
He described this as a sign of enhanced regional security cooperation and improved intelligence sharing among East African nations, which has helped curb cross-border threats.
Somali President Insists on Balanced Foreign Relations with Global Partners
On the topic of international relations, President Mohamud reaffirmed that Somalia maintains strong diplomatic ties with China, though Chinese investments remain limited.
In contrast, several American companies have started investing in Somalia’s growing market, reflecting renewed confidence in the country’s economic stability.
Somalia president said:
“Somalia welcomes genuine partnerships that support our national development.”
Commitment to Security and Long-Term Development
President Mohamud concluded by reaffirming his government’s dedication to combating terrorism and building a stable, self-reliant Somalia.
He stressed that ongoing priorities include:
- Enhancing the Somali National Army’s capacity
- Strengthening international partnerships
- Promoting peace and economic recovery
With these continued efforts, Somalia aims to secure lasting peace, regional stability, and sustainable growth for its people.
