The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has reinforced its role as a trusted global mediator by facilitating a significant prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine.

On Sunday, Russia’s Ministry of Defense confirmed that 146 prisoners of war were released by each side, alongside the liberation of eight Russian civilians from the Kursk region.

UAE’s Role as a Neutral Mediator

The operation was conducted on Belarusian territory under UAE-led mediation.
Both Moscow and Kyiv praised the UAE for its successful diplomatic efforts, highlighting Abu Dhabi’s credibility as a neutral and reliable broker in one of the world’s most complex conflicts.

In an official statement, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs commended the cooperation of Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing that these initiatives reflect the country’s dedication to reducing humanitarian suffering and advancing peaceful dialogue.

According to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), this marks the 17th mediation effort carried out by the UAE since the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022.

    Humanitarian Dimension of the Exchange

The swap extended beyond soldiers, securing the release of Ukrainian journalists Dmytro Khilyuk and Mark Kalyush, who had been detained since 2022 and 2023.

Their release was welcomed by Reporters Without Borders, which described their detention as unjust and called for accountability for those responsible.

On the Russian side, the UAE-mediated deal included the release of eight elderly women civilians from Kursk, as well as the former Kherson mayor Volodymyr Mykolayenko, who had spent more than three years in detention.

These outcomes underscore the UAE’s role in ensuring that humanitarian priorities remain central to mediation efforts.

    Expanding UAE’s Diplomatic Influence

The mediation of UAE in Russia-Ukraine prisoner exchange operations highlights the UAE’s growing diplomatic influence on the global stage.

As it is maintaining balanced relations with both Russia and Ukraine.
While engaging with the West—Abu Dhabi has become a vital bridge for dialogue in international crises.

Russian President Suggests the UAE As A Host for Trump-Putin Summit

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently suggested the UAE as a potential host for a future summit with U.S. President Donald Trump, a proposal widely seen as an attempt to break the deadlock in Ukraine conflict and possibly move closer to a historic ceasefire agreement.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy Thanks the UAE

On Telegram, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy posted images of the freed Ukrainians—many captured since 2022—including a journalist imprisoned shortly after the invasion.
He thanked the United Arab Emirates for their role in overseeing the swap, adding:

“The exchanges are continuing. Perhaps that is possible because of our soldiers, who are increasing the exchange fund for Ukraine.”

The UAE … A Trusted Channel for Peace

The simultaneous acknowledgment by both Moscow and Kyiv of Abu Dhabi’s efforts demonstrates the UAE’s unique ability to navigate high-stakes conflicts while prioritizing humanitarian needs.

Experts note that such mediation not only enhances the UAE’s global reputation but may also pave the way for broader negotiations aimed at long-term stability in Eastern Europe.
