ASEAN countries must deepen technological collaboration with China to effectively combat transnational financial crimes in the digital era, according to Indonesia’s Deputy Attorney General for Civil and Administrative Affairs, R. Narendra Jatna.

How Can China Help in Combating Financial Crimes?

Speaking at the 15th China-ASEAN Prosecutors-General Conference, held from September 22–24 in Hong Kong, Jatna emphasized that China’s advanced expertise in technology and the internet makes it an essential partner for Southeast Asian nations.

“We need to work hand in hand with China to combat crime,” he said.

Tackling Digital Money Laundering and Corruption

Jatna noted that money laundering and corruption increasingly rely on digital platforms, requiring prosecutors and law enforcement agencies to adopt innovative anti-crime strategies.

The annual conference, initiated by China’s Supreme People’s Procuratorate in 2004, gathered about 80 high-level delegations to discuss combating money laundering, corruption, and asset recovery in the technological age.

    Legal Cooperation for Economic Growth

He added that growing business and investment ties between China and Indonesia highlight the importance of closer legal cooperation to support safe and smooth commercial activity.

Currently, 14 Indonesian prosecutors are studying on the Chinese mainland, gaining first-hand knowledge of Chinese law and culture.

Hong Kong as a Strategic Bridge

Jatna also praised Hong Kong’s unique “one country, two systems” framework, saying it positions the city as a vital bridge between the Chinese mainland and ASEAN states.
