In a pivotal ministerial session of the AU Peace and Security Council (AU PSC), both Egypt and Somalia underscored their shared commitment to advancing peace, security, and institutional resilience in the Horn of Africa.
The virtual meeting focused on the evolving situation in Somalia and the transition from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the newly established African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
Egypt Reiterates Support for Somalia’s Sovereignty and Security
During AU Peace and Security Council meeting, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration, Dr. Badr Abdel Aaty, reaffirmed Egypt’s steadfast support for Somalia’s unity, territorial integrity, and national sovereignty.
He praised the Somali government’s efforts in restoring order, strengthening governance, and rebuilding state institutions.
Dr. Abdel Aaty emphasized:
- The importance of a smooth and coordinated transition from ATMIS to AUSSOM
- The need to preserve hard-won security gains
- The urgency of preventing security vacuums that could be exploited by terrorist groups like Al-Shabaab
He also called for:
- Sustainable and predictable funding for AUSSOM
- Enhanced international cooperation to secure the Horn of Africa
- Continued Egyptian support through capacity-building, training, and humanitarian aid
“Without adequate funding, AUSSOM’s ability to fulfill its mandate will be compromised, threatening regional stability and global maritime trade,” he warned.
Somalia Highlights National Ownership at AU Peace and Security Council Meeting
Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hon. Ali Mohamed Omar, also addressed the AU PSC, expressing deep condolences over the tragic loss of five Ugandan peacekeepers in a helicopter crash in Mogadishu on July 2.
He extended sympathy to their families, the Government of Uganda, and the broader AUSSOM community.
Hon. Omar reaffirmed Somalia’s appreciation for the sacrifices made by Troop and Police Contributing Countries, which have played a vital role in:
- Liberating key territories from terrorist control
- Restoring essential public services
- Rebuilding national institutions
AUSSOM is Authorized to Deploy 11,911 Personnel
He emphasized that AUSSOM is a Somali-owned, African-led mission aligned with Somalia’s national security priorities.
As of July 1, 2025, AUSSOM is authorized to deploy 11,911 personnel under the AU PSC mandate, with a focus on:
- Protecting population centers
- Securing critical infrastructure
- Responding swiftly to emerging threats in coordination with Somali forces
To ensure the long-term sustainability of AUSSOM, Hon. Omar proposed convening a dedicated AUSSOM Financing Conference at AU Peace and Security Council meeting.
Shared Vision for a Stable and Self-Reliant Somalia
Both Egypt and Somalia concluded their remarks by reaffirming their commitment to a peaceful, stable, and self-reliant Somalia. Through strong bilateral and multilateral partnerships, they aim to:
- Strengthen national institutions
- Combat terrorism
- Promote long-term development and regional integration
The AU Peace and Security Council meeting marked a critical moment in the transition to AUSSOM, with Egypt and Somalia aligning on the need for sustainable funding, coordinated security efforts, and African-led solutions.
As Somalia moves toward greater self-reliance, international and regional partnerships—especially with Egypt—will remain vital to securing peace and prosperity in the Horn of Africa.
