United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has arrived in Israel for high-level talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as tensions rise following Israel’s unprecedented strike on Qatar last week and its ongoing military campaign in Gaza.

When Did Marco Rubio Visited Israel?

Rubio’s visit, which began on Sunday, comes after President Donald Trump criticised Israel for the failed attack on Hamas leaders in Doha that killed six people, including a Qatari security officer.

Before departing, Rubio told reporters that while Trump was “not happy” with the strike, it would not alter the core of the US-Israel relationship.

The US envoy said his trip would centre on three priorities: securing the release of hostages held by Hamas, ensuring humanitarian aid reaches Gaza’s civilians, and discussing the impact of Israel’s strike on Qatar on efforts for a Gaza truce.

“The president wants this to be finished,” Rubio said, outlining goals to rebuild Gaza and prevent Hamas from re-emerging.

    Diplomatic Damage Control

Analysts say Rubio is also in “damage control” mode after international condemnation of Israel’s escalation in Qatar, a major non-NATO ally of the United States.

Netanyahu has hinted such strikes may continue, despite Washington’s assurances that they will not.

The attack on Qatar derailed ceasefire talks brokered by Doha and drew sharp criticism from Arab states.
It has also deepened rifts over Israel’s threatened annexation of the occupied West Bank and the future of Palestinian statehood.

New Steps to End the War in Gaza

As the United Nations pushes for a revival of the two-state solution and several Western nations prepare to recognize a Palestinian state, Rubio’s meetings in Israel are expected to explore next steps to end the Gaza war and repairing strained US-Arab relations.
