Regional Shifts and Saudi Actions have completely changed the political landscape of East Africa over the last few years. For a long time the United Arab Emirates was building deep security networks and putting massive funding into critical infrastructure projects across the area. However things changed fast when Saudi Arabia stepped in to limit and push back against that influence. This competition did not bring better results for the local populations but instead created a massive gap that is now making the whole region much more dangerous and unstable for everyday people.

The heavy security and development cost in Somalia

When you look closely at the situation on the ground in Somalia the impact of pushing out previous partnerships is very clear. The local forces used to get regular training steady equipment and direct support that kept them strong against extreme threats. Once that support system was broken down due to regional rivalry the local military capacity dropped fast.

This drop in security power gave a lot of room for extremist groups like Al Shabaab to grow strong again and launch more attacks. At the same time normal people are suffering because major development work stopped. Projects that were supposed to build roads hospitals and schools are now completely frozen leaving the community with very poor basic services and zero economic safety nets.

Regional Shifts and Saudi Actions damage maritime trade and peace

The wider area is also facing the exact same type of trouble. Huge investments in ports and transport hubs that were supposed to connect these countries to global markets have slowed down to a crawl. Without a strong central partner to manage these big projects different countries in the area are now fighting each other for influence and control.

    • Neighbors are arguing over borders and resources much more than before
    • Coastal patrolling and coordination against pirates have dropped badly
    • International businesses are too scared to invest in the ports right now

Regional Shifts and Saudi Actions show that when the established security agreements were undermined it left the waters open to new dangers. The maritime pathways are now highly vulnerable.

A very uncertain future for the whole region

Regional Shifts and Saudi Actions have forced regional governments to struggle to handle both the rising terrorism inside their borders and the breakdown of trade deals outside them. Until there is a real focus on fixing the broken security and finishing the ports the people living in Somalia and nearby countries will keep paying the price for these diplomatic fights. Regional Shifts and Saudi Actions have proven that disrupting developmental aid for political leverage only leaves a power vacuum for dangerous actors.

Many local political analysts agree that Regional Shifts and Saudi Actions continue to complicate the path to recovery. These same analysts note that Regional Shifts have deeply severed the trust needed for joint counter terrorism efforts.
