Al-Shabaab is a terrorist organization that is directly related to Al-Qaeda. It has strengthened its reach in Somalia. Its occupation of large areas of Somalia is to make people ideologically a part of its organization. They present themselves as a religious group and then make these people a part of terrorist activities in the name of Jihad. They carry out bombings, looting, and ambushes in Somalia.

A major cause of political instability in Somalia is the terrorist activities of al-Shabaab, which do not stop. But remember that bombs and bullets can never destroy ideas. Even today, there are peaceful people in Somalia who think that this organization has nothing to do with Islam or religion, they only spread chaos in the country. This organization has brainwashed the people so much that now the people under their control do not consider anyone other than them to be right. This is why al-Shabaab has captured the rural areas of Somalia where military operations are also failing.

The Ideological Roots of Al-Shabaab’s Resilience

As mentioned above, Al-Shabaab considers itself an Islamist and religious party and the aim of this organization is the establishment of an Islamic state. For this purpose, this organization eliminates every obstacle that comes in front of it. It is targeting people with bombs and bullets. Any religion prohibits the killing of humanity, but the killing of human beings is common in this organization.

Al-Shabaab has trained the young generation for Jihad by teaching Islam wrongly and is making more young boys a part of their organization. These young people are so mentally mature that they do not think any human being is good except themselves, so they become the target of their bullet. A large-scale military operation is underway in Somalia, but despite this, it is not possible to eliminate al-Shabaab.

Military Strategies vs. Counter-Extremism Approaches in Somalia

Al-Shabaab’s territorial control has been significantly weakened by military efforts and tactics. While most military strategies have many benefits, military strategies fail to address the root causes of extremism. This is the reason why the logistic networks of these groups have not yet been dismantled.

After strategizing against groups like al-Shabaab, terrorism has been largely controlled. which is very important for the peace and stability of the Somali society. By strengthening counter-extremism security measures and involving communities, these issues can be further addressed, and counter-terrorism measures can be taken better. So that peace and stability can be established in society.

Local Grievances and Radicalization: Fueling Al-Shabaab’s Support Base

Al-Shabaab thrives mostly in areas that have been abandoned by Somalia. Due to this the local population is deprived of feeling and is deprived of the right to vote. People there are facing problems like poverty and instability. Due to these problems, these people are forced to live in the ownership of these groups. Because these areas have been abandoned by Somalia. And groups like al-Shabaab have dominated such areas.

There is insecurity and lack of stability in such areas, due to which people feel deprived. Addressing these grievances and issues is critical to preventing Al-Shabaab from growing in support, to demotivate these groups and break their hold. The main objective of which is to control terrorism and increase the peace and stability of society.

To better counter al-Shabaab, Somalia needs an approach that addresses both ideological and socio-economic issues. And by controlling terrorism, peace, and stability can be established in society. For better success, international involvement and unifying communities are very important.

So that grievances can be addressed and groups like al-Shabaab can be defeated. Without a better strategy, it is impossible to defeat groups like al-Shabaab, because strong ideas cannot be weakened by bullets and bombs alone. Addressing underlying grievances is critical to undermining support for these groups. Linking security forces with community engagement is critical to combating counter-extremism.
