Elders have a special place in Somali society because of which harmony is created, and peace is maintained in this society.

    Traditional Role of Elders in Somali Society

    The role of elders is very important in any country to widen consensus and unity and to maintain peace. Because elders have many powers and hold a position of respect. In Somalia, too, elders have a special importance because of being sensible, wise, fair, and experienced.

    The role of elders is respected in every society as they are responsible for solving the problems and conflicts of families and clans. Even in Somalia, the wisdom and traditions of the elders help to maintain the peace of the society and encourage the tribes towards unity. The importance of elders and their roots is very deep in Somali culture.

    The Role of Xeer (Customary Law) in Conflict Resolution

    A customary law known as Xeer was enforced in Somalia at the rural and tribal level and in other cases. According to this law, the elders have the authority to resolve disputes according to the laws. This applies to oral contracts and collective liability.

    This law emphasizes social peacebuilding and establishes law and order in society. According to this traditional law, elders have the authority to resolve disputes and establish peace and order, which brings unity to different regions and tribes and maintains social stability.

    Elders’ Influence in Modern Somali Peacebuilding

    Elders have had an important role in society since ancient times because they can establish peace and solve problems based on their wisdom and experience.
