Turkey brokered a landmark agreement between Somalia and Ethiopia, aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between the two countries. Under this agreement, consensus was reached on Ethiopia’s possible access to the Red Sea and the sovereignty of Somalia.

This diplomatic development improved relations between the two countries, while Turkey strengthened its position as an effective mediator in the region. This agreement could prove to be an important step in promoting stability and cooperation in East Africa.

The agreement, reached in Ankara, restores diplomatic ties between Somalia and Ethiopia after a long period of tension. These developments reflect Turkey’s growing influence as a mediator in the Horn of Africa. The agreement is expected to promote political stability in the region, while it could have far-reaching effects on geographic and diplomatic relations.

Türkiye Mediates Pact to Restore Somalia-Ethiopia Relations

Turkey brokered a landmark deal between Somalia and Ethiopia, restoring diplomatic relations between the two countries after nearly 14 months of tensions. The agreement was reached in Ankara, attended by high-ranking officials from Turkey, Somalia, and Ethiopia. Earlier, Somalia cut ties with Ethiopia on January 1, 2024 following a disputed agreement with Somaliland. As a result of this mediation, 2 main points were settled: respect for Somalia’s sovereignty and increased cooperation between the two countries.

Türkiye Mediates Pact and Strengthens Its Influence in the Horn of Africa

The deal further cements Turkey’s growing influence in Africa, where it has more than 40 embassies. Over the past 20 years, Turkey’s trade with African countries has grown significantly from $5 billion to $40 billion.

Through this agreement, Turkey has established itself as a major regional influence by mediating between the two countries of over 160 million people. The agreement is expected to further strengthen Turkey’s role in conflict resolution and economic cooperation, and increase its influence in the region.

Türkiye Mediates Pact, Paving the Way for Regional Stability

The Turkish-brokered deal has played a major role in reducing regional tensions, which could reduce border conflicts in the Horn of Africa, which affect the lives of millions of people. The escalating conflict between Somalia and Ethiopia has affected trade routes and displaced more than 100,000 people last year.

Turkey’s involvement in the peace talks is part of its broader strategy, under which it has successfully mediated 5 major African conflicts in the past decade. The deal could lead to hundreds of millions of dollars worth of new security deals and economic partnership opportunities.
