In a major step toward food security and sustainable development, the Ministry of Agriculture in Somaliland has announced a $100 million agricultural development project.

The initiative is being funded and implemented by African Food Security, a U.S.-based company specializing in agricultural transformation across the continent.

What are the Goals of African Food Security Project in Somaliland?

According to the Ministry, the project aims to:

    • Increase domestic agricultural production
    • Reduce reliance on imports
    • Unlock export opportunities to Gulf countries, particularly Saudi Arabia

Who Signed African Food Security New Agreement?

The agreement was officially signed by Somaliland President Abdirahman Irro.
It was announced by Minister of Agricultural Development Mahmoud Agiye Yusuf and his deputy Mukhtar Haji Mohamed Farah.

A statement from the Ministry highlighted Somaliland’s strategic location as a key factor in attracting international investment.

The African Food Security company reportedly sees strong export potential for Somaliland-grown produce to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations in the near future.

The President emphasized the government’s new focus on agriculture.
He stated that improving food self-sufficiency is now one of the top priorities for Somaliland.

What is Expected from the African Food Security company Project?

Currently, the region imports the vast majority of its food, while local farmers produce only a small fraction of the supply needed to sustain the population.

By leveraging private sector investment and modern agricultural technologies, the project is expected to:

    • Empower local farmers
    • Improve food production systems
    • Create job opportunities, particularly in rural areas

This initiative comes at a critical time as Somaliland faces increasing pressure to address food insecurity due to climate change, limited arable land, and global supply chain disruptions.
