In a decisive move against terrorism in the Horn of Africa, the United States conducted a targeted airstrike against ISIS in Puntland, a semi-autonomous region of northeastern Somalia.

The operation took place on May 11, 2025 and it was confirmed by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) and conducted in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia.

Details About America Airstrike Against ISIS in Puntland

According to AFRICOM, the strike occurred in the Cal Miskaad mountain range located in Bari region, a known hideout for ISIS militants.

This area has long served as a remote base of operations for extremist factions aiming to destabilize Somalia and expand their influence in the region.

Preliminary assessments are underway, but AFRICOM emphasized that the strike was carried out with precision to minimize civilian casualties and disrupt key operational capabilities of ISIS-Somalia.

“This strike was designed to degrade the ability of ISIS in Somalia to carry out attacks, recruit fighters, and destabilize the region,” said an AFRICOM spokesperson in an official press release.

    Ongoing U.S.–Somalia Security Cooperation

This latest airstrike highlights the deepening military cooperation between the U.S. and Somalia in the shared goal of eliminating extremist threats.

Over the past several years, U.S. forces have supported Somali efforts to counter both ISIS and Al-Shabaab, another major terrorist group affiliated with Al-Qaeda.

The strike is part of a broader strategic initiative to weaken terrorist safe havens and prevent Somalia from becoming a launchpad for regional and global attacks.

    Why Bari Region Matters

Bari region, particularly the mountainous Cal Miskaad area, has emerged as a stronghold for ISIS-Somalia fighters.

Its remote and rugged terrain offers natural cover, making it difficult for Somali forces alone to fully clear the area.

With this strike, the U.S. aims to apply pressure on the group’s leadership and diminish its ability to coordinate regional terror operations.
Especially at a time when Somalia is also fighting Al-Shabaab on multiple fronts.

No Civilian Casualties Reported After US Airstrike Against ISIS in Puntland

As per the U.S. military statement, no civilian casualties have been reported at this time.

AFRICOM reiterated its commitment to responsible military engagement and compliance with international law, noting that further assessments will be made as additional intelligence is gathered.

    Strategic Impact on Regional Security

This operation is part of a larger trend in which Somalia’s federal and regional security forces, such as those in Puntland, are gaining increased support and training from international partners.

It also reflects growing regional trust in Puntland’s capabilities to combat terrorism and maintain stability in a volatile landscape.

Military analysts believe that America airstrike against ISIS may lead to short-term disruption of their operations in the area.

It could also be a stepping stone for further ground operations by Somali security forces backed by international allies.
