In a decisive move to strengthen transparency in humanitarian operations, the Somali National Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) held a high-level consultation meeting in Mogadishu to address the critical issue of preventing the misuse of humanitarian aid.

The session aimed to enhance the fair and efficient distribution of aid to vulnerable communities across Somalia.

The meeting brought together key stakeholders from across Somali society, including:

    • Banadir Regional Administration officials
    • Civil society organizations
    • Representatives from the humanitarian and disaster response sectors

Participants engaged in comprehensive discussions on the systemic challenges facing aid distribution in Somalia.

The forum encouraged open dialogue and produced a list of practical recommendations to enhance accountability and effectiveness in the delivery of humanitarian relief.

    Focus on Accountability and Transparency

Officials from SoDMA underscored the urgent need for transparency and integrity in all aid-related activities.

The agency emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards corruption and any form of aid exploitation, calling for a coordinated national effort to ensure that humanitarian resources reach their intended beneficiaries.

SoDMA also urged local communities to take an active oversight role, encouraging public participation in monitoring aid flows.

This approach is expected to create a stronger accountability mechanism and build trust in the humanitarian response system.

    Commitment to Humanitarian Principles

The Somali National Disaster Management Agency reaffirmed its commitment to upholding international humanitarian standards.

SoDMA pledged to continue working within the legal frameworks of the Federal Government of Somalia and to ensure that all aid efforts respect the dignity and rights of affected individuals.

Formation of a Technical Committee to Oversee Aid Integrity

As a major outcome of the consultation, attendees unanimously agreed to form a specialized technical committee. This newly established body will:

    • Develop mechanisms to prevent aid diversion
    • Enhance inter-agency coordination
    • Improve aid monitoring and reporting systems

The committee will play a central role in safeguarding humanitarian assistance and ensuring that resources are allocated equitably and reach those most in need.

    Strengthening Somalia’s Humanitarian Ecosystem

This initiative by SoDMA marks a significant step toward reforming Somalia’s humanitarian aid infrastructure.

By promoting collaboration, enhancing oversight, and introducing targeted reforms, the agency aims to ensure that humanitarian aid truly serves the needs of the Somali people during crises and emergencies.
