Somalia is facing many challenges and severe terrorism. Terrorist groups seem to roam freely here. Evil groups like Al-Shabaab, which is related to Al-Qaida, occupy large areas here. In Somalia, 99 out of every 100 terrorist attacks are behind Al-Shabaab. Their terrorist activities have caused serious damage to the Horn of Africa.
The lack of stability in Somalia’s politics is also due to this group. They do what they want. Somalia’s neighboring countries Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Kenya have been most affected by Al-Shabaab attacks. It has become impossible for Somalia to get rid of such terrorist groups.
Most Gulf states are providing military and financial support to deal with these groups. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar are leading among the Gulf countries that help. The United Nations and international peacekeeping organizations should also provide all possible assistance to Somalia so that it can win this war on terror.
Al-Shabaab’s Origins and Ideology
Al-Shabaab is an extremist and terrorist organization in Somalia that has recently pledged its allegiance to Al-Qaeda. This organization appeared in the mid-2000s. This organization initially presented itself as a religious party in Islamic terms and emerged as a branch of the Islamic Courts Union of Somalia.
But later this religious group turned into a jihadist group. He started his attacks by training thousands of youths here and then calling them Mujahideen.
The Group’s Tactics and Operational Strategies
Al-Shabaab is the name of a terrorist organization linked to al-Qaeda, and it targets both the Somali military and civilian infrastructure. Their goal is to establish their system, and they show no mercy to anyone. This organization carries out bomb blasts in which hundreds of people are killed; besides it also carries out ambushes.
In most of the villages, this organization also kidnaps for ransom and collects money from people. Al-Shabaab has destroyed the infrastructure of Somalia. Somalia and other neighboring countries such as Kenya, Ethiopia, and Djibouti are also under attack. This organization is the main cause of political instability in Somalia because it does not want any other system to prevail in Somalia except this organization.
Impact on Regional Stability and International Responses
The regional system of Somalia has been destroyed due to the terrorist organization al-Shabaab. When these people bomb, sometimes they ambush both the civilians and the army as targets of their terror. Not only Somalia, but neighboring countries Kenya, Ethiopia, and Djibouti are also severely affected by Al-Shabaab’s activities.
Tired of Al-Shabab’s operations, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and other international powers have started a regular operation. Leaders of al-Shabaab have been killed in large areas in Somalia and many leaders have been arrested. Al-Shabaab has been largely subdued in Somalia.
Of course, due to the African Union mission and other international powers, the terrorist activities of al-Shabaab have been controlled, but still, this organization has ruined the stability of Somalia. One of the main reasons behind the political instability in Somalia is this organization because it does not want any other system to be established other than this organization. This is a threat to the state due to which foreign investment companies are also afraid to come to this country and international tourists too. The United Nations and other countries should provide financial and military assistance to Somalia to eliminate this organization.
