For over a decade, the European Union Training Mission in Somalia (EUTM-S) has been a vital partner in strengthening our nation’s defense and emergency response capabilities.
Now, we are entering an exciting new phase of EU Somalia partnership, focused on self-reliance and advanced skills.
The EU has worked hand-in-hand with the Somali National Army (SNA) and the Ministry of Defence since 2010, offering crucial training, mentorship, and expert advice to help shape our security forces.
Empowering Our Soldiers: The New Era of Military Training
A significant development in EU Somalia partnership is providing essential support through the European Peace Facility (EPF).
This means the EU is equipping our soldiers with the right tools they need, at the right time, to grow stronger and more effective.
This lethal support, including vital ammunition, is already being used in a specialized Shooting Instructor course – a true game-changer for Somalia’s military training.
Certified Instructors are Made from Somali Soldiers due to EU Somalia Partnership
Thanks to this effort, EUTM-S can now deliver even more impactful training.
Somali soldiers are not only mastering precision shooting, tactical awareness, and firearm safety, but they are also becoming certified instructors themselves.
This is a crucial step towards self-sufficiency.
Once this training cycle concludes, Somalia will have its own highly skilled experts ready to teach these vital skills to future generations of soldiers.
Our brave men and women in uniform are taking immense pride in this progress, knowing they are building a more secure future for our country.
Who Manages EUTM-S Initiative?
This important initiative is carefully managed from Brussels.
By the Service for Foreign Policy Instruments (FPI), ensuring that shared values of peace, partnership, and progress are translated into tangible results on the ground.
Saving Lives: Advancing Emergency Medical Care
Beyond military tactics, EU Somalia partnership is also making a life-saving difference in our healthcare system.
Recently, a critical two-day seminar titled “Ultrasound in Trauma – E-FAST Protocol” was hosted by EUTM-S.
Seven dedicated physicians from the Xooga Somali Military Hospital participated.
They learnt to use modern ultrasound technology – a powerful tool that can mean the difference between life and death.

EU Somalia Partnership is Building a Healthier, Stronger Society.
During the seminar, our doctors delved into the theory of the E-FAST protocol, a method used worldwide to quickly detect internal bleeding and other life-threatening injuries in trauma patients.
The second day focused on hands-on practice, giving them the confidence to apply ultrasound in real-world emergencies.
While this might seem like standard professional development in other places, for Somalia, it’s a monumental leap forward in building a healthier, stronger society from the inside out.
EU Somalia Partnership: A Ripple Effect
This advanced medical training is part of a continuous series of programs developed by EUTM-S in collaboration with Somali defense and medical institutions.
Each seminar is thoughtfully designed to address the urgent needs of our country.
Where every improvement in emergency care has a far-reaching impact.
For the Somali National Army, this directly translates to more soldiers surviving injuries that were once considered fatal.
With enhanced emergency care, our medics and doctors can make quicker, smarter decisions, stabilizing patients and getting them the help they need in critical moments.
EU Somalia Partnership: Greater Peace of Mind Across Somalia

In combat situations, where every second is precious, these newly acquired skills can be truly life-saving.
But the positive effects extend far beyond the battlefield.
By improving trauma care in military hospitals, Somalia’s entire healthcare system benefits.
The valuable knowledge and techniques shared in military settings often find their way into broader civilian practice, as doctors bring these new skills into public hospitals and clinics.
This means families across Somalia can have greater peace of mind, knowing that trained professionals are ready to respond not just in warzones, but also in everyday emergencies like car accidents or natural disasters.
Our communities become more resilient, and trust in our medical institutions grows stronger.
Peace is Built by EU Somalia Partnership
This isn’t just about military training; it’s about empowerment, fostering long-term stability, and the EU’s unwavering commitment to its partners.
The young people in Somalia are gaining the skills and confidence they need to protect our country and build a brighter future.
The EU stands with us, not just for today, but for a truly stable and prosperous Somalia.
This journey reminds us all that peace isn’t simply something that happens; it’s actively built through strong partnerships, dedicated hard work, and a shared commitment to progress.
EUTM-S is proud to be a part of Somalia’s remarkable journey, showcasing what true solidarity can achieve.
