In a concerning security breach, armed militias launched an attack on Galkayo Central Prison in Puntland, Somalia.
This attack is an attempt to free inmates convicted of serious crimes.

What happened in Galkayo Central Prison?

The facility, known for housing individuals sentenced for murder and drug trafficking, faced intense gunfire as security forces responded to the assault.

According to local sources cited by Somali outlet KaabTV, the confrontation began when unidentified assailants tried to storm the prison in a coordinated attempt to release prisoners.

Although the gunfire has reportedly ceased, it remains unclear whether any inmates were successfully freed during the raid.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of casualties or the full extent of damage from the attack.

However, reports indicate that the confrontation caused panic in surrounding neighborhoods, raising broader questions about regional stability and prison security in Puntland.

A History of Prison Attacks in Galkayo

This latest incident in Galkayo Central Prison is not the first of its kind.

Galkayo Prison was previously targeted just four months ago in a similar armed raid.
That assault resulted in one death and multiple injuries, again stemming from attempts to forcibly release detainees—some of whom were facing death sentences handed down by Puntland’s military courts.

Galkayo Central Prison houses high-risk offenders, many of whom are linked to tribal conflicts and serious criminal networks, making it a repeated target for armed factions seeking to overturn judicial rulings.

    Growing Security Challenges in Puntland

The attack highlights the ongoing challenges Puntland faces in securing vital infrastructure amid rising tensions, tribal rivalries, and the threat of militant operations.

Analysts warn that repeated assaults on correctional facilities could undermine the authority of regional institutions and embolden criminal groups.

As Somalia works toward national stabilization and security reforms, the incident underscores the urgent need to fortify justice infrastructure and intelligence coordination in volatile areas like Galkayo.
