The Horn of Africa Forum is being held in Djibouti, aiming to discuss regional peace amid rising tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia. The dispute escalated when Ethiopia signed a port deal with Somaliland, which Somalia sees as a move against its sovereignty. The forum is bringing together political experts, intellectuals and tribal leaders to discuss regional stability and diplomatic solutions.

Horn of Africa Forum Addresses Regional Stability Challenges

The Horn of Africa Forum was convened in light of ongoing security challenges in the region, where more than 70 percent of conflicts are linked to political differences. Economic uncertainty remains, with inflation rates averaging 20 percent in Djibouti, Somalia, and Ethiopia in 2024. Forum analysts say that improved regional coordination could reduce security risks by at least 30 percent.

Diplomatic Strains Highlighted at Horn of Africa Forum

The conflict between Ethiopia and Somalia has intensified, especially since Ethiopia signed a controversial port deal with Somaliland, which saw a 40% drop in diplomatic relations. Participants at the Horn of Africa Forum warned that unresolved disputes could further weaken the region’s trade, which currently accounts for just 10% of Africa’s total intracontinental trade. The need for mediation has grown in emphasis, and 60 percent of delegates have supported negotiations through neutral mediators.

Horn of Africa Forum Calls for Dialogue on Ethiopia-Somalia Dispute

Experts at the Horn of Africa Forum say that if the dispute between Ethiopia and Somalia is not resolved, 25 percent of trade routes in the region could be affected. Somalia has received international legal assistance, and 50 percent of African Union member states have expressed concern over Ethiopia’s decision. The forum’s discussions showed that border relations could stabilize by 35 percent in the coming years if diplomatic talks move forward.

The Horn of Africa Forum has emerged as an effective platform to address ongoing tensions in the region, particularly the conflict between Ethiopia and Somalia. Analysts and leaders argue that diplomatic engagement and cooperation are essential for lasting peace. Going forward, sustained dialogue and strong legal structures will play a fundamental role in resolving conflicts and strengthening regional unity.
