Marking the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Somalia and China, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Somalia to the People’s Republic of China, Dr. Hodan Osman Abdi, affirmed the depth and strength of the bilateral ties between the two nations.
She praised the ongoing development of this partnership across various sectors.
Her remarks came during an official speech she delivered at a special event organized by the Institute of African and Chinese Studies in the capital, Beijing, under the theme:
“Somalia and China After 65 Years: A Strategic Relationship Entering a New Phase.”
Early Recognition and a Trust-Based Historical Relationship
In her speech, the ambassador highlighted that Somalia was the first country in East Africa to recognize the People’s Republic of China in 1960, a move that reflects the strong historical foundation upon which Mogadishu–Beijing relations have been built.
These ties have evolved to now encompass key strategic sectors.
Somalia and China Areas of Cooperation
Dr. Hodan emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation between Somalia and China, particularly in the areas of:
- Education and cultural exchange
- Trade and investment
- Infrastructure and state-building
- Empowering Somali youth to benefit from China’s development experience
She stressed that the Somali government is keen to transform the historic relationship into a practical and sustainable partnership that benefits both peoples.

The ambassador described China as a reliable strategic partner, commending its supportive stance toward Somalia in international forums and its continued willingness to contribute to Somalia’s development and stability.

The event in Beijing was part of a series of activities organized by the Somali Embassy in China to commemorate the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
