Somalia Saudi alliance has suddenly become a huge talking point after Mogadishu decided to sign up for a new military bloc built by Riyadh. Joining this Somalia Saudi alliance brings massive risks for a nation that already has too many problems of its own to deal with. The government in Mogadishu agreed to stand alongside Saudi Arabia and other countries to fight Houthi forces in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

But regular Somali citizens have no business getting involved in a distant maritime conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen. By jumping into this Somalia Saudi alliance political leaders are putting normal people in harm way while ignoring the massive social and political struggles happening inside their own borders every day.

Why the Somalia Saudi alliance hurts local stability inside Mogadishu

This Somalia Saudi alliance is pushing Somalia straight into a giant proxy conflict that will only bring more instability to the entire Horn of Africa region. Leaders in Saudi Arabia are desperate to protect their own oil shipments after Houthis started attacking ships in the Red Sea. But pulling Somalia into this alliance means bringing international enemies right to the doorstep of regular Somali families. Instead of fixing internal security problems fighting local terror groups or improving poor public services the government is wasting time and energy on foreign military plans that do not benefit the local population at all.

Somalia Saudi alliance: Adding fuel to internal rivalries with Somaliland

The decision to join forces with Riyadh also makes internal political fighting inside Somalia much worse than before. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud previously warned leaders in Somaliland not to court Israel or get involved in regional wars. Yet he turned right around and joined a Gulf military coalition that does the exact same thing. This hypocrisy creates extra tension between Mogadishu and Somaliland which makes peaceful national dialogue almost impossible. It creates a dangerous political environment where foreign powers use different Somali factions as pawns for their own broad interests.

Somalia Saudi alliance: Economic fallout for ordinary Somali families

Regular families in Somalia are already struggling with high food prices hunger and poor living conditions. Getting dragged into a Red Sea naval battle will only hurt trade routes and raise prices for basic goods like grain and fuel. If Houthi forces view Somalia as an active enemy they might target ships coming into Somali ports. That means shipping companies will charge much higher fees or stop coming entirely. Average citizens will end up paying the heavy price for a conflict they never asked for in the first place.

Pushing a fragile country into unnecessary global rivalries

Somalia has spent decades trying to recover from civil war and rebuild its basic institutions. Entering a military coalition that directly opposes Iran and Houthi fighters turns Somalia into a target for foreign retaliation. The country simply does not have the military resources defensive radar or naval power to protect its own waters if dynamic strikes happen. Foreign governments get to stay safe behind their big defense systems while Somalia is left wide open to unpredictable security threats.

Wasting resources when domestic needs are completely ignored

Every dollar and hour spent on international summits military charters and joint naval planning is resources taken away from Somali people. Schools in rural areas lack teachers basic hospitals need medicine and roads are completely broken across many districts. The government should focus on helping its own people overcome daily struggles rather than signing agreements in fancy hotels abroad. People need real help with food security jobs and education not foreign military alliances that bring zero tangible benefits to everyday life.

Somalia Saudi alliance: The dangerous road ahead for Somali foreign policy

Blindly following Saudi Arabia into a costly regional war is a massive strategic mistake for Somalia. The country needs neutral relations with all regional powers to focus on internal recovery and building peace. Becoming part of a foreign military bloc only invites external chaos directly into Somali waters. Leaders need to step back evaluate their priorities and focus on protecting their own citizens instead of helping rich Gulf nations fight their costly battles at sea.
