Tensions are escalating along Kenya-Somalia border after a Kenyan woman was injured in a crossfire between rival security agencies in Somalia’s Bulla Hawa area, a volatile town near Mandera.

The incident occurred on October 23, 2025, in the Kullun area, when two Somali security groups reportedly exchanged gunfire following a disagreement.

    Kenya-Somalia Border Situation Remains Tense

According to Kenyan authorities, a stray bullet crossed into Mandera.
The bullet struck a local woman on the Kenyan side, sparking panic among residents already living under constant threat from cross-border violence.

Police confirmed that the injured woman was delivered to a nearby hospital for treatment, and that the situation at the border remains tense.

Since then, Kenyan officials have reached out to their Somali counterparts seeking clarification and urging restraint to prevent further escalation.

Incidents in the Last Few Months Due to Kenya-Somalia Border Clashes

This latest shooting adds to a growing list of security incidents at the Kenya-Somalia border.
It underscores the fragile peace in the region.

    September 2025

Clashes between Somali forces and local militias in Bulla Hawa, located just across the border from Mandera town, have repeatedly spilled into Kenyan territory in recent months.

On September 28, 2025, another Kenyan woman was injured when a stray bullet from fighting in Somalia landed in her compound near the border.

    August 2025

Police reports indicated that she was hit in the upper right arm while inside her home and was later treated at Mandera Referral Hospital, where surgeons successfully removed the bullet.

Similarly, in August 2025, a tragic incident claimed the life of Fatuma Madnur Mohamed, who stepped on an unexploded ordnance near Mandera town.

Investigations revealed that the device had been launched from Bulla Hawa during previous clashes between Somali security factions vying for territorial control.

Clashes Between Somali Factions Raise Spillover Fears

The recurring violence in Bulla Hawa stems from a power struggle between Somalia’s federal forces and the semi-autonomous Jubaland administration over the control of the Gedo region.

The ongoing confrontations have left civilians caught in the crossfire, with many Somalis fleeing toward the Kenyan border in search of safety.

Kenyan security agencies are on high alert, fearing that renewed fighting could trigger a refugee influx into Mandera County.

    Protecting a Vital Hub

“We have intensified border patrols to protect civilians and prevent any spillover,” one security official said.

The border area is a vital hub for trade and daily movement, with residents from both sides crossing regularly for shopping and family visits.

Despite the volatile security situation, cross-border economic exchanges continue, though traders report growing anxiety about safety.

Local Residents Caught in the Middle

For communities living along Kenya-Somalia border, the sound of gunfire from across Bulla Hawa has become a grim part of life.

Many residents of Mandera describe living in constant fear of stray bullets and explosive remnants of war.

“People here are scared. Sometimes the shooting starts suddenly, and we have no idea where the bullets will land,” said a Mandera resident whose home faces the Somali frontier.

Local Leaders Call for Dialogue to Stop Kenya-Somalia Border Clashes

Local leaders have called on both governments to strengthen dialogue and establish joint security coordination to prevent such incidents from recurring.

They warn that without immediate action, the violence could worsen, threatening regional stability and humanitarian conditions.

    De-escalation Efforts Continue

Kenyan authorities have confirmed they are working with Somali officials and regional mediators to de-escalate tensions in Bulla Hawa.

According to police sources, sporadic gunfire has been reported within a few kilometers of the Mandera border crossing, prompting tighter patrols and surveillance.

Security experts say the situation highlights the complex dynamics of the Kenya-Somalia border conflict, where local disputes, political rivalries, and the presence of armed groups all intersect.

Efforts are ongoing to restore calm, but residents on both sides remain wary.
For now, the region sits on edge, hoping that diplomacy can succeed before another stray bullet crosses the line.
