Migrants including Somalis missing, at least 42 people are believed to have died after a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Libya last week, the United Nations migration agency (IOM) said.

Migrants including Somalis missing, seven survivors were found after the boat’s engine failed in heavy seas in the early hours of November 3, hours after it left the coastal town of Zuwara in northwestern Libya, the IOM said.

The survivors had been stranded at sea for six days and were found when Libyan authorities launched a rescue operation near the al-Buri gas station on Saturday.

Migrants including Somalis missing, the rubber dinghy was said to be carrying 47 men and two women. The missing include 29 Sudanese, eight Somalis, three Cameroonians and two Nigerians.
IOM said it had provided immediate medical care, water and food to the survivors, who were taken to Tripoli, where they were reported to be in stable condition despite suffering from illnesses caused by their time at sea.
Migrants including Somalis missing, Libya has become a transit point for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty in Africa and the Middle East.
Last month, a wooden boat leaving al-Zawiya in northwestern Libya capsized in strong waves, killing 18 people, according to IOM. The 64 survivors, who were from Sudan, Bangladesh and Pakistan, were among the 1,000 people who have died since the start of 2025, including more than 500 missing off the coast of Libya, according to IOM’s Migrant Tracking project.
