Eid al-Adha Holiday in Somalia was officially declared by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs of Somalia.

According to the announcement there will be three-day public holiday for Eid al-Adha 2025, covering both public and private sector workers.

    The holiday will span:

    • Saturday, June 7
    • Sunday, June 8
    • Monday, June 9

This applies to all employees across Somalia, in accordance with Article 65 of Somalia’s Labor Law (Law LR.36), which explicitly lists Eid al-Adha as a mandatory national holiday for all workers, regardless of their job sector or location.

The Ministry also clarified that if Eid coincides with a Friday, the official holiday begins the following Saturday, ensuring workers still receive a full, uninterrupted break.

This legal provision helps preserve rest time and allows the Somali workforce to fully engage in religious rituals, family activities, and cultural traditions during the Eid season.

Why Eid al-Adha Is So Important

Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most sacred dates on the Islamic calendar. It honors the story of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), who was willing to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command — a story that symbolizes faith, devotion, and obedience.

The holiday marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage and is celebrated by:

    • Attending large congregational Eid prayers
    • Offering ritual sacrifices of livestock (Qurbani)
    • Donating to the needy and poor
    • Hosting festive family meals and gatherings

Eid al-Adha is a time of reflection, giving, and unity — a moment for Somali families to come together in celebration.

The Ministry emphasized that Eid al-Adha Holiday plays a key role in promoting national unity, spiritual renewal, and social well-being.

By officially recognizing Eid as a nationwide holiday, Somalia reaffirms its cultural values and gives citizens the space to reconnect with their roots, families, and communities.
