US Secretary of Defense Pat Hegseth stated recent US Africa Command (AFRICOM) operations in Somalia, in which he described the strikes as part of the fight against terrorist groups and regional security efforts by Somali forces. He said that these measures are important for promoting stability in the region and help in weakening the network of terrorists.

These operations are aimed at eliminating the power of extremist groups and reducing threats to US interests and allies in the region. The United States remains committed to supporting Somalia’s fight against terrorism, working with global partners to promote stability in East Africa.

U.S. Africa Command’s Strategic Role in Somalia

The US Africa Command (AFRICOM) has been in Somalia since 2007, supporting Somali forces against terrorist groups. Over the past two years, AFRICOM has conducted more than 100 airstrikes aimed at suppressing the operations of extremist groups such as al-Shabaab. These groups have carried out more than 200 attacks in East Africa since 2020. The presence of the command has played an important role in reducing terrorist activities in the region.

Impact of Recent U.S. Strikes on Terrorist Groups

Recent US airstrikes claim to have neutralized more than 50 al-Shabaab militants in Somalia. These attacks aimed to target the terrorist leadership structure and cut off their sources of funding. Research has shown that targeted strikes have led to a 40 percent reduction in militant attacks in areas where air campaigns have been intensified. These operations are playing a key role in reducing the strength of terrorist groups in East Africa.

Somali Forces and U.S. Collaboration in Counterterrorism Efforts

In the past year, the U.S. military has trained more than 2,000 Somali soldiers, a major achievement in improving the capacity of the Somali forces. Thanks to this training and joint operations, more than 15 large Al-Shabaab cells have been eliminated. This partnership has reduced terrorist activity in Somalia’s volatile regions by 25 percent. These cooperations aim to strengthen Somalia’s internal security and ensure the security of the country.

Regional Security and the Global Implications of AFRICOM Operations

AFRICOM’s operations in Somalia are an important part of stabilization efforts across the Horn of Africa, where more than 10 million people are vulnerable to instability. The United States has pledged more than $200 million in aid to security programs in the region over the past three years.

As terrorist activity increases in the region, these operations play a critical role in countering extremism, strengthening global security, and securing critical trade routes. Along with this, they also help in strengthening international partnerships.

US Africa Command’s activities in Somalia are contributing to regional stability and the fight against terrorism. Strategic operations and joint actions with the Somali Army have achieved notable success in weakening extremist groups. Continued cooperation and assistance are needed to ensure lasting peace and security in East Africa.
