Somalia reaffirmed its commitment to responsible digital innovation by participating in the 3rd Global Forum on the Ethics of AI.
Bangkok welcomed this high-level event which was co-hosted by UNESCO and the Thai government.
It welcomed over 20 ministers and global leaders to discuss ethical AI governance and international cooperation.
Somalia Highlights National Digital Strategy and AI Readiness
Representing the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Ahmed Osman Diriye, Deputy Minister of Communications and Technology, took part in high-level sessions, including the Ministerial Dialogue on International Cooperation on AI.
His remarks emphasized Somalia’s efforts to align national policies with global standards for responsible AI use.
Key highlights from Minister Ahmed’s address included:
- The launch of Somalia’s National Digital Strategy (2025–2029) to guide the country’s digital transformation.
- Progress on vital legislation such as the Data Protection Act, E-Transactions Law, and a Cybersecurity Bill.
- The creation of a dedicated AI Governance Office to craft forward-looking policies and ensure ethical AI development.
The Global Forum on AI Ethics Supports Somalia AI Readiness
Somalia was also selected as one of the pilot countries to test UNESCO’s AI governance readiness assessment tools.
In a session focused on national AI readiness, Minister Ahmed engaged with global counterparts on best practices and implementation strategies.
He emphasized that participation in the forum allows Somalia to:
- Strengthen global partnerships in AI and digital governance
- Gain access to technical assistance and international expertise
- Contribute to shaping inclusive and ethical global AI policies
