The 34th EASF Policy Organs Meeting officially started on 15 – July in Mogadishu, marking the first time Somalia has hosted this high-level regional security forum.
The opening ceremony was led by Hon. Omar Ali Abdi, State Minister for Defence of the Federal Government of Somalia.
What Is the Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF)?
The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) is a regional peacekeeping and security mechanism established to respond swiftly to crises across Eastern Africa.
It is one of five regional components of the African Standby Force (ASF) and includes military, police, and civilian units.
EASF’s mandate covers:
- Conflict prevention and resolution
- Peacekeeping operations
- Humanitarian assistance
- Rapid response to security threats
Member states include Burundi, Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, and Uganda.

In his opening remarks, Minister Omar welcomed delegates from EASF member states and emphasized the significance of Somalia’s hosting role:
“We are proud to host the 34th EASF Policy Organs Meeting in Mogadishu for the first time.
This reflects the confidence regional countries have in Somalia and demonstrates the progress we’ve made in security and rebuilding our defence institutions.”
He reaffirmed Somalia’s commitment to regional peace and stability, highlighting the country’s active engagement in EASF’s strategic goals:
“This meeting reinforces our collective dedication to peace, security, and strategic cooperation in Eastern Africa.
Strengthening coordination and joint efforts, particularly in defence and security, remains a top priority.”

The force is recognized for its ability to:
