Navigation drop in Strait of Hormuz is causing massive confusion around the world right now because shipping traffic has hit historically low levels over the past few days. This sharp decline started after a series of coordinated attacks hit three UAE ships in the area. Things got much worse very quickly when Donald Trump made a shocking statement where he threatened to declare this key waterway as American territory. He also warned Iran about severe economic punishment. Iranian military leaders responded immediately by saying they are completely ready to fight back against any military action.

People who track global maritime data noticed the initial drop right away. Before the big statement from Washington about fourteen major ships went through the narrow passage every day without any real problems. But on Friday when the news came out only eight ships dared to make the journey. Ship captains and big oil companies got very scared about what might happen next so they decided to pause their normal routes.

The primary reason for this rapid change is that global supply chains simply cannot handle high risks in such a small space. On Saturday only three vessels actually passed through the area. These included a gas tanker named More Gas traveling from the UAE to Pakistan a general cargo vessel named H7 SMB4 coming straight from Kuwait and a small local transport vessel named Admiral 10 moving between two regional ports. By Sunday the total fell even lower to just two ships which is something nobody has seen in a very long time.

By Monday August 17 only four ships were spotted on tracking maps. This means trade in the region is almost completely stopped. Insurance companies are now charging huge amounts of money to cover any ship that wants to go near the area. Many ship owners prefer to wait in safe waters rather than risk losing their expensive cargo or putting their human crew in real danger.

Navigation drop in Strait of Hormuz affects Iranian trade

It is very interesting to look at how Iranian vessels are handling this strange situation. Before the main threats were made at least seven ships connected to Iran were moving through the water every day as part of their normal business. But just twenty four hours after the big speech only one Iranian ship was registered on radar screens. This clearly shows that even local operators are deeply worried about military conflict breaking out.

The navigation drop in Strait of Hormuz is causing major panic because this specific passage is extremely important. The ongoing navigation drop in Strait of Hormuz threatens energy stability since a huge percentage of the world oil passes through it every single day. If the navigation drop in Strait of Hormuz continues for too long energy prices everywhere will go up very fast. Governments in many countries are watching the situation closely and trying to figure out what to do next to keep international waters safe for commercial trade.

Every single country that buys oil from the Gulf region is hoping that political leaders can find a peaceful solution before things get completely out of control.
