A United Nations expert has called on the global community to maintain strong political and financial support for Somalia, warning that Somalia fight against terrorism is a persistent and complex challenge.
The UN Praises Somalia Fight Against Terrorism Strategy
Speaking at the end of an official visit, UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and counter-terrorism, Ben Saul, praised Somalia’s comprehensive counter-terrorism strategy.
This strategy includes military action, law enforcement, and addressing root causes of extremism.
However, he expressed concern over human rights violations.
Including arbitrary arrests, use of military courts, and poor detention conditions.
Somalia Counter-Terrorism Laws Risk Freedoms
Saul warned that Somalia’s broad counter-terrorism laws and security measures risk undermining basic freedoms, including freedom of expression, humanitarian access, and civil society work.
He also raised alarms about child recruitment, gender-based violence, and the involvement of clan militias without legal oversight.
The expert urged Somalia to establish strong accountability mechanisms, promote inclusive governance, and rehabilitate former combatants.
Especially women affected by extremist violence.
He also called on international partners not to abandon Somalia amid funding cuts, stressing that continued support is critical to building peace, rule of law, and human rights protection.
