Somali fashion identity is a very hot topic right now among the young people and the elders because the way we dress is starting to look very different from how our grandparents used to look back in the day. it is a big struggle for many families because the new generation wants to wear jeans and hoodies like they see on the internet while the older people want to keep the traditional style alive and well. because somali fashion identity is so connected to who we are as a people it feels like we are losing a piece of our soul every time we choose a western shirt over a traditional wrap.

we see that the streets of mogadishu are now full of many different styles and it is becoming hard to tell if we are in africa or if we are in a big city in europe. it is important to talk about these things so we can find a way to stay modern without forgetting the beautiful clothes that make us unique in the world.

The struggle between new styles and the old somali fashion identity

one of the biggest parts of the somali fashion identity is the guntiino for the women which is a long and colorful cloth that they wrap around their bodies in a very graceful way. in the past every woman knew how to wear this with pride but now many young girls prefer to wear the abaya or even western dresses because they think it is easier to move around in the city.

this shift in the somali fashion identity is making the local tailors very worried because they don’t have as many customers for the traditional silk and cotton fabrics as they used to have before. also the men used to wear the macawis which is a simple wrap around the waist but now you see almost every young man wearing trousers and belts which is a major change in the landscape. we have to ask ourselves if this new somali fashion identity is a good thing for our culture or if it is just a way of trying to look like everyone else on the planet.

many designers are now trying to fix this problem by creating a mix of both worlds so that the somali fashion stays relevant for the kids who live in the diaspora. they take the old patterns and the bright colors of the somali cloth and they use them to make modern suits and jackets that look very cool and fresh for the 2026 season. this new version of the somali fashion is helping the youth feel proud of their roots while still feeling like they fit in with their friends at school or at the office.

it is a creative way to keep the history alive and to show that our culture is not something that is stuck in the past but something that can grow and change with the times. when you see a young person wearing a modern jacket made of traditional fabric you can see that the somali fashion is still very much alive even if it looks a bit different than it did fifty years ago.

keeping the heart of the somali fashion identity for the next generation

We also have to think about the special occasions like weddings where the somali fashion identity really shines with the gold jewelry and the beautiful perfumes and the henna on the hands. even the people who wear western clothes every day usually go back to the traditional style when it is time to celebrate a big event with their family. this shows that the somali fashion identity is still the most important thing for our hearts even if we use modern clothes for our daily work.

we should encourage the schools to have days where the students wear their traditional clothes so they can learn about the meaning of every color and every pattern. the somali fashion identity is a story of our land and our animals and our spirit and it is a story that should never be silenced by the noise of the global fashion industry.

The way we dress is a choice but it is a choice that tells the world who we are and where we came from. we should not be afraid to mix the old and the new but we should always make sure that the somali fashion identity stays at the center of our choices. it is a gift from our ancestors and it is a gift that we should pass on to our children with a lot of love and care for the details. the world is always changing but our pride in our culture should stay as strong as the sun in the desert.

let us keep wearing our colors and sharing our style because the somali fashion identity is one of the most beautiful things we have to show the rest of the human family. turn to your wardrobe tomorrow and think about how you can show your roots in a way that feels right for you and for your life today. the journey of fashion is long but as long as we remember our home we will never be lost in the crowd.

Somali fashion identity in a modern changing world

the future of the somali fashion identity is in our hands and it is looking very bright and colorful for everyone who loves our heritage. turn the page on the boring styles and let us embrace the beauty of our own identity with a big smile on our faces.
