Somali National Force development has reached a very important turning point this week in January 2026 as the government of Uganda officially announced it will pull its troops out of the country. This news came directly from General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who said that the long mission which started way back in 2007 is finally coming to an end soon. For nearly two decades the Ugandan soldiers have been the biggest part of the African Union missions, first with AMISOM and then with AUSSOM, helping to keep Mogadishu safe from attacks. This Somali National Force transition is a proud moment for Somalia because it shows that the local army is finally becoming strong enough to stand on its own feet without needing thousands of foreign soldiers to guard the airport and the port. Even though Uganda has been a good friend and a helpful neighbor for a long time every nation wants to be responsible for its own safety and this move is the first big step toward total independence for the Somali people.

The decision by Uganda to start this Somali National Force handover is also because the new African Union Support and Stabilization Mission (AUSSOM) has been facing some money problems lately. With less funding coming from international partners it makes sense for the Somali government to speed up the training of its own elite units like the Danab and Gorgor commandos. This Somali National Force growth is what the people have been waiting for because it means the country is moving away from being a “war zone” and toward being a normal stable state. Of course there will be many challenges when 6000 Ugandan soldiers leave their posts but the Somali generals have already started moving their own battalions into strategic areas to make sure there are no gaps for the extremists to use.
Why the Somali National Force Can Handle the Transition
First of all we have seen that the Somali National Force has already been leading the fight in the central regions and winning many battles against Al-Shabaab on its own. Within the Somali National Force success stories of 2025 and 2026 we see a new spirit of patriotism that was not there ten years ago. Second the army now has better equipment and its own air support which means they can respond to threats much faster than before. Third this Somali National Force takeover will save a lot of money for the national budget because they won’t have to pay for the expensive logistics of a foreign mission. Fourth it gives the local soldiers more confidence when they see that they are the only ones protecting their mothers and children.

Supporting the Somali National Force in the Post-Uganda Era
Fifth the government is planning to hire more young graduates to join the Somali National Force as officers which will bring more modern ideas into the military leadership. Sixth and finally the departure of the Ugandans is being done in a very “phased and orderly” way so that the Somali National Force has time to learn exactly how to manage the most sensitive security sites in the capital. This is not a sudden goodbye but a planned move that has been discussed in many meetings between Mogadishu and Kampala. The Prime Minister of Somalia has already thanked Uganda for their “sacrifice and brotherhood” over the last 19 years while reminding the world that the Somali National Force is ready for this historic responsibility.
In the end the Somali National Force is the true shield of the people and its time has come to shine. While we will always remember the help from our African brothers the goal of a sovereign Somalia has always been to have its own sons and daughters guarding the land. This Somali National Force era is a sign of hope that the long years of trouble are finishing and a new chapter of peace is beginning for every family from Kismayo to Bosaso. In 2026 we are not looking back with fear but looking forward with a lot of courage and unity.
