World Cup politics history is full of crazy stories where powerful presidents and dictators tried to change the results of football matches. Just recently in the 2026 tournament the American president Donald Trump made a shocking phone call to the FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Trump was very angry about the red card that his star player Folarin Balogun received during the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This red card meant the player could not play in the next big game against Belgium. After this phone call FIFA suddenly changed its mind and allowed the player to join the match in Seattle on Monday. Many fans are totally furious about this decision because it shows that politicians still have too much power over the beautiful game.

This recent event is definitely not the first time a leader tried to interfere with sports. If we look back at the past we can see that World Cup politics history is packed with hidden deals corruption and massive pressure from governments.

World Cup Politics History and the Italian Dictatorship of 1934

The historical record shows that World Cup politics history started getting dark back in 1934 when Italy hosted the tournament. The fascist dictator Benito Mussolini did not even like football very much at first but he quickly realized that the tournament was a perfect tool to make his government look strong. He attended every single game and went inside the referee dressing rooms to pressure them before the kickoff. The referees were so terrified that they made terrible decisions in favor of the home team. Italy won the trophy in the end but FIFA later had to ban two referees for life because the cheating was too obvious.

Four years later in 1938 the situation became even worse right before the second world war started. Germany had just taken over Austria and they forced the best Austrian players to wear the German shirt. These players were forced to do the Nazi salute in front of thousands of fans in France.

During that same year Mussolini sent a scary message to his own Italian players before the final against Hungary. The telegram simply said win or die. The Hungarian goalkeeper later said that he was glad he let in four goals because he saved the lives of eleven men. This terrifying moment is a huge part of World Cup politics history that people can never forget.

World Cup Politics History: The Controversial Matches in Argentina during 1978

Another famous chapter in World Cup politics history happened in 1978 when Argentina was ruled by a military dictator named General Jorge Videla. The government spent a lot of money to host the tournament because they wanted to hide the violent things they were doing to their own people. Argentina needed to beat Peru by at least four goals to reach the final instead of their rivals Brazil. Peru had a very solid defense but they suddenly collapsed and lost the game six zero.

For many years people have talked about a secret agreement between the two governments to fix the match. Although nobody found any solid proof the strange result helped the dictator celebrate a massive victory and clean up his dirty image in front of the international media.

Trump and the Modern Football Scandals of 2026

Now in the summer of 2026 we are seeing that the mix of sports and government power is still alive. Donald Trump did not care about the official rules when he saw that Folarin Balogun was banned. His phone call to the head of FIFA worked fast because the disciplinary committee changed the suspension to a conditional one within just four days. This means the top American striker is fully clear to play against Belgium in Seattle.

Football experts are calling this a modern example of World Cup politics history repeating itself. It shows that when a powerful country hosts the tournament their political leaders can still influence the decisions of the sports federation.

Why Football and Government Do Not Mix Well

When presidents get involved in sports decisions it destroys the fair play that fans love to see. Regular teams from smaller nations do not have a president who can call FIFA to cancel a red card. This creates an unfair advantage for rich and powerful hosts who can change the rules whenever they face a difficult situation.

FIFA always claims that politics has no place in football but their recent actions prove the exact opposite. If the international federation keeps listening to political leaders the fans will eventually lose all respect for the tournament.

The Future of the Tournament under Political Pressure

As the games continue this week the shadow of this political phone call will hang over the American team. If the United States wins the match against Belgium people will always say they only won because the president cheated the system. This puts a lot of unnecessary pressure on the players who just want to play normal football.

Looking back at the whole World Cup politics history we see that sports always survive these political games in the end. Dictators and presidents come and go but the love for the game stays with the regular fans who watch from the stands.

In conclusion the connection between politics and the football world has been a big mess for nearly a century. From Mussolini in the 1930s to the military rulers of the 1970s and Donald Trump today the story remains exactly the same. Leaders will always try to use the popularity of sports to achieve their own selfish goals. It is up to the fans and honest sports journalists to keep talking about World Cup politics history so that the truth is never hidden from the public.
