July 1st marks Somalia 65th Independence Day, a defining moment in Somali history.
In this day the southern regions gained independence from Italian colonial rule in 1960, and Somalia’s north and south united to form the Somali Republic.

This national holiday stands as a powerful symbol of self-determination, unity, and the sacrifices made by generations in pursuit of freedom.

    Sacrifice and Resistance

This day honors the remarkable contributions of Somali heroes who fought tirelessly for liberation.

Among them is Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, a prominent nationalist leader who inspired unity and led sustained resistance against colonial occupation.

These early efforts—both peaceful and armed—eventually forced the withdrawal of colonial powers.

Every year, wreaths are laid on memorials to pay tribute to those who gave their lives for Somalia’s independence, ensuring their legacy endures across generations.

Citizens and leaders alike are revitalizing national identity, viewing unity as a cornerstone for peace and prosperity.

Somalia 65th Independence Day serves as a reminder of the need for collective action against terrorism and corruption—major obstacles to Somalia’s development.

The Role of Youth in Rebuilding the Nation

With young people comprising the majority of the population, they represent a vital force in Somalia’s recovery.

Harnessing their creativity and energy is crucial for sustainable growth and social progress.
Empowering youth means investing in the country’s long-term success.
