Somalia’s Ministry of Defense has launched an investigation into a suicide bombing at Jaalle Siyaad Military Academy, one of the country’s premier training centers for army recruits.

The attack occurred on Wednesday in the capital city of Mogadishu, and was swiftly claimed by al-Qaida-affiliated militant group Al-Shabab.

Details of the Suicide Bombing at Jaalle Siyaad Military Academy

    • The explosion was reportedly carried out by a suicide bomber wearing a vest.
    • According to eyewitness and recruit Adan Hassan, the attacker was intercepted before reaching his target and detonated the device, causing minimal casualties.
    • Al-Shabab stated the target was a Western delegation involved in training Somali forces, though the specific group remains unconfirmed.

History of Attacks on Jaalle Siyaad Military Academy

This is not the first time Jaalle Siyaad Military Academy has been targeted.

In July 2023, a suicide bomber disguised in uniform killed at least 25 soldiers and injured over 70 others.

    Al-Shabab’s Insurgency Strategy

Al-Shabab continues to target military installations as part of its campaign to overthrow the Somali government and impose its strict interpretation of Islamic law.

Despite losing ground in recent years, the group remains active and dangerous.

    Government Response & Security Operations

    • Somali forces have intensified counterterrorism operations in recent months.
    • A recent offensive in the Hiran region reclaimed key towns and villages from militant control.

    Al-Shabaab Latest Propaganda Video

Al-Shabaab latest propaganda video of 2-minute and 14-second was published on Sunday evening.

It showcased a large cache of weapons and military equipment it claims to have captured during a recent attack on a Somali National Army base in the Barugid area, near Baidoa—the interim capital of Southwest State, located 256 kilometers from Mogadishu.

On June 30, the area witnessed intense clashes after Al-Shabaab launched a surprise dawn assault on a military base in Bay-Barugid, resulting in casualties on both sides.

Just a week earlier, on June 23, Al-Shabaab claimed full control of Barugid following a violent raid.
The same area had seen previous confrontations in April between the group and local clan militias.
