Hamas announced on Monday that it has accepted Gaza ceasefire proposal presented by Arab mediators, even as Israel insisted its positions remain unchanged.

The development comes amid reports from Gaza’s Health Ministry that the Palestinian death toll after 22 months of war has exceeded 62,000 people, with experts warning that the territory is on the brink of famine.

    U.S. Reaction and Trump’s Comments

While the United States has played a central role in mediating talks, U.S. President Donald Trump appeared skeptical about the progress of negotiations.

In a social media post, Trump stated: “We will only see the return of the remaining hostages when Hamas is confronted and destroyed!
The sooner this takes place, the better the chances of success will be.”

Israel’s Plans to Reoccupy Gaza City

Following the collapse of Gaza ceasefire talks last month, Israel unveiled plans to reoccupy Gaza City and other densely populated areas.

Analysts warn that such an escalation could deepen the humanitarian crisis already facing over two million Palestinians in the besieged enclave. International organizations have also raised alarm that Gaza is sliding into famine.

The Israeli offensive, partly aimed at pressuring Hamas, has drawn global condemnation while also sparking unrest inside Israel.

Many citizens fear for the fate of the remaining hostages captured during the October 7, 2023 attack, and mass demonstrations were held on Sunday with hundreds of thousands of Israelis demanding their release.

Egypt Pushes for A Renewed Gaza Ceasefire Efforts

Egypt has continued to play a central role in mediation efforts.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty told The Associated Press that Cairo and its regional partners are working to revive a U.S.-backed proposal for a 60-day ceasefire.

The plan would include the release of some of the estimated 50 hostages still held in Gaza, with negotiations to follow for a permanent ceasefire and the release of all remaining captives.

Abdelatty also revealed that U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff has been invited to join the upcoming Gaza ceasefire talks, in hopes of breaking the deadlock and preventing further escalation.
