The Federal Government of Somalia, through its Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, has successfully concluded a week-long technical workshop in Nairobi aimed at modernizing the country’s airport infrastructure and advancing civil aviation standards.

The initiative, held in partnership with the World Bank, reflects Somalia’s renewed push to improve national connectivity and stimulate economic growth.

Enhancing Safety, Reliability, and Efficiency of Aviation Sector

The closing session was chaired by Hon. Mohamed Farah Nuux, Somalia’s Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, who emphasized the critical need to align Somalia’s aviation infrastructure with internationally recognized standards.

He underscored that enhancing the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the aviation sector is vital for boosting trade, tourism, and regional integration.

The workshop, which began on September 15, focused on several high-priority goals.
Among these was the installation of modern navigation and communication equipment to enable Somali airports to handle both daytime and nighttime operations safely.

This advancement is expected to reduce delays, improve passenger experience, and increase the capacity of airports to manage larger volumes of air traffic.

Another key focus area was the rehabilitation of smaller regional airstrips across Somalia.

Upgrading these facilities will allow them to accommodate larger aircraft and improve air connectivity between Somalia’s regions, thereby enhancing access to essential services and supporting local economies.

    Aligning with Global Standards

Strengthening aviation infrastructure to meet global civil aviation standards was a central theme of the workshop.

Participants reviewed international best practices, safety protocols, and regulatory frameworks to ensure that Somalia’s aviation sector becomes fully compliant with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidelines.

The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation expressed its confidence that these combined efforts will help transform Somalia’s air transport sector into a key driver of national development and integration with regional and international markets.

    World Bank Reaffirms Commitment

The World Bank reaffirmed its strong commitment to supporting Somalia’s aviation sector and broader infrastructure development.

In its statement, the Bank highlighted the importance of reliable and efficient transport systems for economic recovery, job creation, and sustainable development in Somalia.

This collaboration marks an important step in Somalia’s journey toward building a modern, secure, and globally competitive aviation industry that can serve as a cornerstone of the country’s long-term growth and stability.
