Somalia is preparing for its first-ever offshore oil drilling in January 2026, marking a milestone in the nation’s bid to unlock its vast energy potential.

Somalia’s Offshore Oil Drilling: A Step Toward Energy Independence

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud confirmed that drilling at Somalia’s offshore block will be conducted with Turkish technology, stressing adherence to national laws on transparency and environmental protection.

The announcement follows years of seismic surveys and exploration.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre recently said new petroleum data indicated “promising outcomes,” though full details remain unpublished.

    Untapped Reserves and Economic Promise

Somalia’s reserves are estimated to hold up to 10 billion barrels of oil across 53 offshore blocks along its 3,000 km coastline.

Earlier estimates placed the potential value at $8.5 trillion, though commercial viability is yet to be fully determined.

The Ministry of Petroleum has indicated that two blocks alone could be worth $1.25 trillion at current market prices.

Petroleum Minister Dahir Shire emphasized transparency, sustainable investment, and partnerships as cornerstones of the sector’s growth.

He said Somalia aims to position itself as a leading energy player in Africa through legal reforms, workforce training, and continued surveys.

    Political and Security Challenges

Despite optimism, investment prospects depend on Somalia’s political stability.
President Mohamud’s announcement comes amid disputes over constitutional reforms opposed by Puntland and Jubbaland.

He stressed the importance of dialogue, saying: “We have chosen to resolve conflict through consensus.”

Meanwhile, Somalia continues to battle Al-Shabaab, with recent security gains attributed to both the Somali National Army and international partners.

    Outlook

If successful, Somalia’s 2026 offshore oil drilling could transform its economy, generate jobs, and attract global investors.

However, the venture will require balancing political stability, transparency, and environmental safeguards to truly usher in an oil boom.
