Israeli forces have detained Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and other passengers aboard a fleet of aid ships attempting to reach Gaza, sparking international outrage.

The operation targeted more than 12 vessels of the “Global Solidarity Fleet” (GSF), which aims to break the 18-year blockade of Gaza and deliver essential food, water, and medical supplies to the besieged territory.

How Did Israeli Forces Detain Greta Thunberg?

According to organizers, the fleet departed from Barcelona, Spain, on August 31, gathering support from multiple Mediterranean ports.

At least 30 boats remain at sea, about 46 nautical miles from Gaza, while 13 were intercepted.
GSF called Israel’s actions an “illegal attack on unarmed humanitarian workers”, while Israel claimed activists intended provocation rather than aid delivery.

What is the Destiny of Global Solidarity Fleet?

The intercepted activists, including lawmakers from Spain and Italy, were transferred safely to an Israeli port.

Israel stated that Greta Thunberg and others are unharmed. The operation triggered protests in several countries, including Italy, Turkey, and Colombia, and drew condemnation from international leaders who described the interception as a violation of humanitarian norms.

    Urgent Need for Humanitarian Access

This incident highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where UN reports indicate rising food insecurity and civilian suffering.

Despite offers to deliver aid through Israeli ports, the fleet insisted on reaching civilians directly, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian access amid escalating tensions in the region.
