In a landmark event symbolizing progress in Somalia’s defense sector, Minister of Defense Ahmed Moallim Fiqi led a ceremony on Sunday in Mogadishu to welcome Captain Mohamed Muse Muhamed.

Who is Captain Mohamed Muse Muhamed?

Captain Mohamed Muse Muhamed is the first Somali officer in 40 years to graduate from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.

The celebration brought together senior Somali and British officials in recognition of the growing partnership between Somalia and the United Kingdom in the fields of military training, security, and institutional development.

Among those in attendance were British Ambassador to Somalia Charles King, Captain James Edwards, the UK Embassy’s Military Attaché, Deputy Commander of the Somali National Army Abdullaahi Adan Hussein.

As well as senior officers from Somalia’s Ministry of Defense and the British diplomatic mission.

Why is Captain Mohamed Graduation from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst Important?

In his address, Minister Ahmed Moallim Fiqi congratulated Captain Muse for his historic achievement and commended the UK government’s enduring commitment to Somalia’s security and capacity-building efforts.

He emphasized that this milestone reflects the Somali government’s dedication to professionalizing its armed forces and empowering a new generation of military leaders capable of safeguarding national stability.

What is Minister Fiqi Comment on Captain Muse’s Success?

“This achievement marks a new era of excellence and cooperation,” Minister Fiqi said.

“Captain Muse’s success demonstrates Somalia’s potential and the importance of our partnership with the United Kingdom in developing a modern, disciplined, and well-trained national army.”

The defense minister also noted that Captain Muse’s graduation represents hope for Somali youth aspiring to serve their country in uniform, reaffirming that Somalia’s armed forces are gradually reclaiming their professional and institutional strength after decades of conflict.

    Strengthening Bilateral Defense Cooperation

The United Kingdom has been one of Somalia’s most consistent international partners, offering extensive support in training, logistical assistance, and institutional reform within the defense and security sectors.

Through multiple programs, the UK has provided training for Somali officers, contributed to the rehabilitation of military facilities, and supported Somalia’s fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

The UK’s assistance also includes equipment donations and advisory support aimed at strengthening Somalia’s defense institutions and improving operational effectiveness.

Ambassador Charles King reaffirmed Britain’s commitment during the ceremony, stating:

“The United Kingdom is proud to stand alongside Somalia as a trusted partner in building a professional defense force that ensures peace and stability across the country.”

Building a Modern Somali Defense Force

Captain Muse’s graduation from Royal Military Academy Sandhurst —a world-renowned military academy known for producing elite officers and global leaders—represents a significant milestone in Somalia’s ongoing journey toward rebuilding a strong, professional, and accountable national army.

     Somali Government’s Broader Reform Agenda

The event also underscores the Somali government’s broader reform agenda, which focuses on:

    1. Creating unified, well-trained security forces capable of protecting citizens.
    2. Defending national sovereignty.
    3. Countering threats posed by extremist groups such as Al-Shabaab.

The Somali Ministry of Defense continues to implement reforms that prioritize discipline, training, and leadership development within the Somali National Army (SNA).

These efforts are crucial as the country prepares for the gradual transition of security responsibilities from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to local forces.

    Looking Toward a Stable Future

As Somalia strengthens its defense institutions, partnerships like the one with the United Kingdom will play a key role in ensuring long-term peace and stability.

The graduation of Captain Mohamed Muse not only celebrates an individual accomplishment but also highlights the promise of a new generation of Somali military officers who will shape the nation’s future.

Minister Fiqi concluded his remarks by reaffirming Somalia’s gratitude to the United Kingdom for its unwavering support and expressed optimism that this collaboration will continue to produce future leaders who contribute to national and regional stability.

“This achievement inspires all Somalis,” Fiqi said.
“It reminds us that dedication, discipline, and cooperation can transform challenges into milestones of pride.”
