The National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (NIEBC) has officially confirmed 918,890 registered voters in Banadir Regional Administration, marking a major milestone in Somalia’s democratic transition.

NIEBC Chairman Abdikarin Ahmed Hassan announced the figures, describing the successful registration drive as “a strong start” and evidence of Somalis’ renewed commitment to democratic participation after decades under a clan-based system.

“The enthusiasm we witnessed was extraordinary—citizens, including mothers and elders, were eager to reclaim their right to vote,” Hassan said, adding that a record turnout is expected in the November 30th, 2025 elections.

According to the Commission, 69% of registered voters are youth aged 18–34, highlighting a powerful youth-driven demand for political change.

Gender participation stands at 62% male and 38% female, setting new standards for inclusivity in Somalia’s evolving political landscape.

Banadir Regional Council elections will serve as a pilot phase for nationwide direct elections planned for 2026.

The NIEBC has also registered 14 political associations, paving the way for a more competitive, multi-party political environment.

With voter registration completed, preparations now focus on voter education, logistics, and ensuring a transparent, peaceful election that strengthens Somalia’s democratic foundations.
