    Why Was The Somali Deportation Deal Controversial?

    Somali deportation deal came under fire when Swedish media said Sweden gave millions in aid to Somalia to take back deported folks. This Somali deportation deal started in late 2023 with talks between officials and got exposed in 2025 causing big talk in both countries. People worry it mixes help money with pushing people out raising questions about fair play and corruption.

    Swedish radio Ekot dug deep finding emails and talks showing the link. Somalia’s side says no such thing all aid clean and open. But the Somali deportation deal led to more folks sent back and even kicked out a Swedish aid worker over money delays.

    Back in December 2023 Sweden’s ambassador worked out something with folks close to Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. Sweden moved about 100 million kronor around 10 million dollars from regular aid to projects tied to the PM’s office. In swap Somalia agreed to accept deported Somalis including some with crime records who didn’t want to go.

    Before that Somalia often said no to taking people back. After the Somali deportation deal things changed with forced returns jumping up like 28 in one year. Money went through UN or World Bank but some say it still helped the PM’s circle too much skipping normal checks.

    Experts called it high risk vague goals easy for misuse. One guy working on returns said obvious corruption chance. The Somali deportation deal stayed quiet till media spilled it making folks mad in Sweden about using aid like bribe.

    Somalia kicked out Sweden’s top aid person in May saying she blocked cash. Then Sweden changed rules to free up the rest of the money and deportations started again. All this shows how the Somali deportation deal caused fights behind scenes.

    In Sweden opposition wanted checks on ministers saying bad to tie aid to kicking people out. Some called it insane risking graft in a place known for it. Migration boss said it’s just to make countries take their own back no wrong seen yet.
