Trump oil policy has become the main focus of the White House this week as President Donald Trump pledged on Thursday to take new steps to stop the climb of energy prices. After a week of heavy fighting in the Middle East that saw global markets shaking the President told reporters that further action is imminent to reduce the pressure on families at the gas pump.

This Trump oil Strategy is a shift from earlier in the week when he seemed less worried about the rising costs saying that the military campaign against Iran was the top priority. Now with gasoline prices hitting a national average of $3.25 per gallon the administration is looking for ways to calm the nervous investors and keep the economy moving forward. Many people are wondering if these new measures will include opening up more domestic supplies or using the Navy to protect the tankers that are stuck in the Persian Gulf.

    Trump Oil Policy

Trump Oil Policy and the Strategic Petroleum Reserve

One of the biggest questions about the Trump oil Strategy right now is whether the government will release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to bring down the cost of a barrel. While some advisors are pushing for this move the President has signaled that he might not need to tap into the emergency stash just yet because he believes the market will stabilize on its own. Instead the Trump oil Strategy has focused on offering special insurance to shipping companies so they feel safe moving their cargo through the war zones. This is a very unusual step for a President but it shows how serious he is about keeping the “free flow of energy” alive even while a war is happening. By giving these guarantees he hopes to prevent the supply from drying up which would send prices much higher than they are today.

The Role of Domestic Energy Dominance

Another key part of the Trump oil Strategy involves the “America First” agenda that has been running since the start of his second term in 2025. The administration has already opened up millions of acres of federal land and water for new drilling to ensure that the US leads the world in production. This Trump oil policy is designed to make the country less dependent on what happens in the Middle East so that a conflict in Iran doesn’t hurt a worker in Ohio. Even though the war has caused a 16 percent jump in oil prices recently the White House argues that their long-term Trump oil policy of “energy dominance” is the only reason prices aren’t even higher right now. They believe that by producing more oil at home they can eventually force the global prices back down to where they were before the fighting started.

Dealing with the Strait of Hormuz Blockage

The most difficult challenge for the Trump oil policy this month is the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz by the Iranian forces. Since a fifth of the world’s oil passes through this tiny area any trouble there leads to an immediate price spike for everyone. The President has stated that the Trump oil policy includes using the US Navy to escort tankers through the strait “as soon as possible” if the situation doesn’t improve. This bold move is meant to show the markets that the US will not let any country shut down the global energy trade. If the Navy starts these escorts it could be the final piece of the Trump oil policy needed to break the panic and bring the cost of a gallon of gas back under three dollars.

Looking Ahead to the November Elections

Politics is always a factor and the Trump oil policy is definitely influenced by the upcoming midterm elections later this year. The Republican party knows that voters hate high gas prices and that an expensive commute can change the way people vote in November. This is why we are seeing such a fast response from the Oval Office to announce these “additional measures” before the prices get out of control. The Trump oil policy is basically a race against time to end the conflict or secure the shipping lanes before the inflation starts to eat away at the gains made last year.

If the President can pull this off and bring the prices down rapidly he will likely use it as a major victory for his “peace through strength” and energy stability platform.
