Launching Event of the New Political Party in Somalia
The event, held with high-level government participation, included leaders from the federal government and several regional states.
Notably excluding the presidents of Puntland and Jubaland.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was elected as the party’s leader and presidential candidate for the upcoming 2026 popular elections.
Among the elected party members are Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre and South West State President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen.
New Political Party in Somalia: Aims and Controversy
Supporters of the Justice and Solidarity Party claim its mission is to promote justice, federal unity, and political reform.
However, critics argue that the formation of the party is a move by President Mohamud and his allies to consolidate power and sideline opposition voices.
The party’s formation comes amid a heated political climate.
As the federal government insists on conducting “one person, one vote” elections in 2026.
This plan is strongly opposed by Puntland and Jubaland as well as prominent political leaders.
International actors have also urged Somalia to pursue a more inclusive and consensus-based electoral process that reflects the collective interests of all stakeholders, to ensure a peaceful and credible outcome.
