The Somali National Army’s (SNA) battle against the Al-Shabaab insurgency is facing severe challenges.

These challenges are due to recent funding cuts and abrupt leadership changes.
The mentioned obstacles are hampering the effectiveness of the government’s military campaign to reclaim areas controlled by the militant group.

Slow Progress for Somali National Army.

Over the past year, Somalia’s offensive against Al-Shabaab, particularly in the central regions, had gained momentum.

However, recent disruptions in financial support and instability within the army’s leadership have slowed progress significantly.

Sources indicate that a lack of consistent salaries, equipment shortages, and limited logistical support are undermining morale among front-line troops.

Can Somali National Army Maintain Independent Security?

Additionally, frequent reshuffling of military commanders and unclear strategic direction have created further uncertainty within the army’s ranks.

Critics warn that this instability risks reversing hard-won gains and allowing Al-Shabaab to regroup and launch new attacks.

The situation is further complicated by the planned drawdown of the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
Raising concerns about Somalia’s readiness to independently maintain security.
